Name:____________________________ English I Competency Goals By the end of the semester in English I: Goal 1: The learner will express reflections and reactions to print and non-print text and personal experiences. Objective 01: The learner will be able to narrate personal experiences through writing a descriptive personal narrative, letter, or journal entry with a level of III or IV. Writing: Personal Narrative (Nonfiction Unit- Autobiographical) Objective 02: The learner will be able to respond reflectively to a variety of expressive texts through writing a reflective paragraph, essay, or journal entry with a level of III or IV. Writing: Reflective (Poetry Unit-Mood/Tone) Objective 03: The learner will be able to demonstrate the ability to read, listen to and view a variety of increasingly complex print and non-print expressive texts through writing a descriptive paragraph, essay, or journal entry with a level of III or IV AND taking a reading test with a minimum score of 70%. Writing: Descriptive (Poetry Unit-Figurative Language) Test with 70% (Poetry Unit) Goal 2: The learner will explain meaning, describe processes, and answer research questions to inform an audience. Objective 01: The learner will be able to demonstrate the ability to read, listen to and view a variety of increasingly complex print and non-print informational texts through a reading test with a minimum score of 70%. Test with 70% (Informational Unit) Objective 02: The learner will be able to explain commonly used terms and concepts through writing a definition paragraph or paper with a level of III or IV. Writing: Definition (Epic Unit-The Odyssey-Hero) Objective 03: The learner will be able to instruct an audience in how to perform specific operations or procedures through writing a process paragraph or paper using visuals and media for a product or presentation with
    2. a level of III or IV. Writing: Process with visuals (Informational Unit- Research Paper) Objective 04: The learner will be able to form and refine a question for investigation, using a topic of personal choice, and answer that question through writing a research paper with a level of III or IV. Writing: Research Paper (Informational Unit- Career) Goal 3: The learner will examine argumentation and develop informed opinions. Objective 01: The learner will be able to demonstrate the ability to study arguments through writing a persuasive paragraph or speech with a level of III or IV. Writing: Persuasive (Nonfiction Unit) Objective 02: The learner will be able to express and support an informed opinion through writing an editorial, letter to the editor, or position/argumentative paragraph or paper with a level of III or IV. Writing: Argumentative (Nonfiction Unit) Objective 03: The learner will be able to demonstrate the ability to read, listen to and view a variety of increasingly complex print and non-print argumentative texts through a reading test with a minimum score of 70%. Test with 70% (Nonfiction Unit-Persuasion & Argumentation) Goal 4: The learner will create and use standards to critique communication. Objective 01: The learner will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of communication through writing a comparison/contrast paragraph or paper with a level of III or IV. Writing: Comparison/Contrast (Short Story Unit- POV) Objective 02: The learner will be able to read and critique various genres through writing a critical analysis paragraph or paper with a level of III or IV. Writing: Critical Analysis (Drama Unit-Romeo & Juliet) Objective 03: The learner will be able to demonstrate the ability to read, listen to and view a variety of increasingly complex print and non-print critical texts through a reading test with a minimum score of 70%. Test with 70% (Nonfiction Unit-Literary/Media Criticism) Goal 5: The learner will demonstrate understanding of various literary genres,
    3. concepts, elements, and terms. Objective 01: The learner will be able to read and analyze various literary works through a reading test with a minimum score of 70%. Test with 70% (Each test on the individual units of short story, novel, drama, and epic.) Objective 02: The learner will be able to demonstrate increasing comprehension and ability to respond personally to texts by selecting and exploring a wide range of genres through writing a cause and effect paragraph or paper with a level III or IV. Writing: Cause and Effect (To Kill a Mockingbird- Atticus’s Decision) Goal 6: The learner will apply conventions of grammar and language usage. Objective 01: The learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of conventional written and spoken expression through grammar tests with a minimum score of 70%. Test with 70% (All Grammar Tests) Objective 02: The learner will be able to discern and correct errors in spoken and written English through the practice of peer editing resulting in improvement in a peer’s written work.
