    • 2. • The Titanic was a famous British passenger ship.
    • 3. • It struck an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in 1912.
    • 4. It was traveling fromSouthamton, England to NewYorkCity.
    • 5. • The Titanic brushed up against an iceberg about 11:40pm on April14.
    • 6. .• The hit caused a number of small cracks in the side of the ship.
    • 7. • Also the seams or places where parts were joined came apart in this area.
    • 8. • Seawater flooded through the front of the ship.
    • 9. • About 21 hours later the Titanic broke in two and sank.
    • 10. • The Titanic had only enough life boats for about half of 2,200 passengers and crew.
    • 11. • The first rescue ship, the Carpathia, arrived on the scene a couple of hours after the Titanic sank.
    • 12. • The Carpathia saved 705 people, mostly women and children. A total of 1,517 people died.
    • 13. • The Titanic was the largest and grandest ship of this time.
    • 14. • Many people believed that it was unsinkable.
    • 15. • Studies of the disaster showed that the cold Atlantic waters made the steel ships body brittle or easy to break.
    • 16. • And the ship was traveling too fast in an area where there was danger of icebergs.
    • 17. • The Titanic was going at to top speed when the iceberg was first seen.
    • 18. • In 1985 a team of French and America scientists found the wreck of the Titanic.
    • 19. • It lay in two sections about 400 miles (650kilometers) southeast of what is now new found land and Labrador Canada.
