  • Chapter 8 – Functions and Graphing 8.1 - Functions
  • The “Fun”ction Machine
  • Functions
    • A function is a special relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element in the range.
  • Determine whether each relation is a function. Explain.
    • {(-3, -3), (-1, -1), (0, 0), (-1, 1), (3, 3)}
    b. x 7 6 5 2 -3 -6 y 2 4 6 4 2 -2
  • Use the vertical line test to help determine if a relation is a function. For each value of x, a vertical line can pass through no more than one point at a time on the graph. Function Not a Function
  • Graph each relation. Then determine if each relation is a function by using the vertical line test. x 1 0 4 5 y -1 0 -4 -5 x 1 0 1 2 y 4 0 -2 -4
