RESPONSIBLE TOURISM IN DESTINATIONSAccording to the World Summit on Sustainable Development inJohannesburg in 2002.Having the following characteristics, Responsible Tourism:1. minimizes negative economic, environmental, and social impacts;2. generates greater economic benefits for local people and enhancesthe well-being of host communities, improves working conditions andaccess to the industry;3. involves local people in decisions that affect their lives and lifechances;4. makes positive contributions to the conservation of natural andcultural heritage, to the maintenance of the worlds diversity;

In the past, Korean travels used to beled by travelers or travel agencies.However, as public awareness ofenvironment and responsible travelshas been raised, travels are increasinglyfocused on respecting localenvironment and people.Domestically Green Tourism aroundagricultural regions is rising. AndResponsible Tourism(Fair-travel) orGood Travel are becoming more andmore popular for international travels.The number of travel agencies as socialenterprise specializing in sustainabletourism is growing as well. Particularlythe community-based tourism, drivenby local people, is being introduced asa way to consider local economy andenvironment while increasing localemployment at the same time.
Travel Agents in KoreaFor the past 20 years the number of Korean travelers has increased so rapidlythat now annually 13 million people travel abroad.Asia, including China, Japan and Southeast Asian countries consists the 76%of all the overseas travels. The number of travel agencies has grown rapidlyas well.Now there are approximately five thousand travel agencies, among whichthree thousand are dedicated to overseas travels.
Sustainable Tourism, however, has to compete against mega travelagencies that lead low-cost shopping-driven tourism.In addition, as a social enterprise it is very difficult for sustainabletravel agencies to develop travel products independently and withoutany structural support from the government.Various information networking is crucial as well in developingsustainable travel products.
1) Inbound Travels by Foreign Visitors In 2008, 6.89 million people visited Korea. This translates into 8.6 billion dollars (ten trillion Korean Won) in tourism income. Four countries out of the 5 most visited are visitors from Asian countries (71.9% of total visitors). The 76.4% of Korean travelersvisited Asian countries.
