  • GOOGLE PAYS 12M FOR PINK PHONE  Would you design the future of Google with a “Cabernet Purple” or “Spearmint” backplate? That‟s the question Motorola Mobility asks with the Moto X, the first major product the company has announced since being acquired by Google in 2012.  The Moto X is a middling smartphone with a few noteworthy features, including the ability to be controlled solely by voice commands and a screen that displays the time and notifications without having to be fully turned-on. But for many consumers the most notable aspect of the device might be the stunning number of variants that will be available at launch.  Nearly every aspect of the Moto X can be changed, from the color of its backplate to its storage capacity and the wallpapers that ship as part of its operating system. The Verge reports that there will be 504 variants of the device available at launch, all of which are available through the Moto Maker website. (AT&T will be the only carrier to offer customized units when the device launches later this Fall, but that restriction is expected to be short-lived.)  Most smartphones, and many consumer electronics products in general, are available in just a few colors. The iPhone 5 comes in black or white. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is available in black, white, and brown. The list goes on, and illustrates a concept best explained by Andy Warhol:
  • KINDLE SINGLES LAUNCH PARTY  Amazon Kindle Singles nailed an interview with President Barack Obama on Tuesday, a boon for the economy car of publishers.  Singles launched in 2011 with great fanfare about saving long-form journalism. The editorial staff hand selects stories that run from 5,000 to 30,000 words, an awkward length somewhat between a magazine story and book. Kindle Singles are, to bastardize Stephen King, ”an ill-defined and disreputable literary banana republic.” He was talking about novellas, which are really just short novels, but the same could be said of the Single. Seventy percent of each e-book sale goes to the author, giving short fiction and non-fictionwriters a way to make money off awkwardly sized stories.  Kindle Singles has evolved over time, and the Obama interview is a marker of its creeping maturity. It may not officially be a grown-up in the world of narrative non-fictionstorytelling, but it‟s getting there.  When I was at Columbia Journalism School in 2011, few of my classmates had heard of Kindle Singles. Although major writers like Stephen King and Susan Orlean had penned stories, the platform wasn‟t exactly viral. Instead of spreading quickly through the short-form-literary-and-non-fiction-loving masses (do those even exist?), Kingle Singles was slowly building towards becoming a prominent player in the media world.  In early 2012, author Terrence McCoy pitched his 36-page story about Chinese development in Cambodia to traditional long-form journalism outlets before he tried Kindle Singles. After discussions with The Atlantic and The New York Times Magazine fell through, he went the Singles route, a choice he‟s glad he made. “One of the greatest benefits of Kindle Singles was that it allowed a story like that to live at its intended length,” McCoy says. “If it had been hacked down to 5,000 or 6,000 words to fit inside a Mother Jones or New York Times magazine it would have lost some of its impact.”
  • LINKEDIN BOOMS ON WALLSTREET  LinkedIn continues to be on of the few companies that can do no wrong on Wall Street, continuing to beat estimates and display growth curves that consistently move up and to the right. Amazon would perhaps be one of the few other exceptions, as Jeff Bezos‟ short-term-loss-for-long-term-gain continues to confound the status quo.  The professional network announced its second quarter earnings results on Thursday, and it was another good one, as the company grew to 238 million members and saw revenue increase to 59 percent to $363.7 million from $228.2 million in Q2 2012. Meanwhile, net income also jumped to $3.7 million from $2.8 million in Q2 last year, while non-GAAP net income was $44.5 million, compared to $18.1 million in 2012.  “Accelerated member growth and strong engagement drove record operating and financial results in the second quarter,” LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner said in today‟s statement. “We are continuingto invest in driving scale across the LinkedIn platform in order to fully realize our long-term potential.”  To build that scale and to follow through with its ongoing plans to build out the go-to professional content network, LinkedIn‟s investments have included those like the $90 million acquisitionof Pulse and startups like Maybe to dig deeper into mobile.  LinkedIn‟s adjusted EBITDA for the second quarter was $88.6 million (24 percent of revenue) compared to $50.4 million for Q2 2012, and GAAP diluted EPS for the second quarter was $0.03, while non-GAAP diluted EPS for Q2 was $0.38.
  • NATURAL HAIRSTYLES FOR WOMAN OF COLOR  Natural Hairstyles For Woman Of Color :Summertime is harsh on all women‟s hair, but women of color often have a tougher time with the heat drying their scalp and hair. It‟s especially true when they regularly treat their hair with chemicals.  That‟s one reason many Oklahoma City women are ditching the chemical treatments to go au natural.  “It‟s just so much easier,” said Kizzie Ledbetter, 30, a professional singer in the band Adam & Kizzie. The Oklahoma City woman wears her hair in a funky Afro that gets her a half-dozen compliments a day.  Her mother has followed suit, letting her naturally curly hair grow into a short, tailored cut. She kicked the coloring habit, and now her natural, bright white color gives her an exotic and natural beauty.  “She looks so beautiful,”Ledbetter said.  Finding the right style for your natural black hair can depend on several factors, including your hair‟s health, length and curl patterns, to name a few.  “We get into the habit of putting chemicals and things that are not natural in our hair, and then at the age of 29 or 30, we don‟t know about our hair. We have to re-educate ourselves on our own natural hair,” said Desiree Irving, a natural hair stylist at The Hair Cafe, 1120 N Walker.  Many women of color straighten their hair with perms or chemical relaxers because transitioning to all natural hair can be a style headache.
  • KEVIN HART TREY SONGZ NO NEW FRIENDS – VIDEO  What do you get when you put comedian Kevin Hart, singer Trey Songz, and NBA player James Harden in the same room? The answer is a whole lot of buffoonery!  Kevin – who has been celebrating a recent birthday and his Let Me Explain movie release – crashed Trey Songz‟s Essence Music Festival press conference, grabbing the mic and insisting that he be the one to answer Trigga‟s questions from that point on.  He followed up by impersonating the singer and ending all questions with Trey‟s signature ad lib “Yuuuuup!”  To add to the random and hilarious moment, James Harden steps in during the Q&A and uses Kevin‟s head as an armrest.  No, it doesn‟t stop there.  Just before the conference, the trio was spotted acting crazy backstage while shouting “No new friends! No new friends!” You can find that video below.
  • SOLANGE TO PLAY AALIYAH IN BIOPIC  There have been talks of an Aaliyah biopic for years and despite a plethora of potential suitors to play her being tossed around, we still have no real answer. Or do we?  Word on the street is that Solange, aka Beyonce‟s little sister (don‟t kill us, Solo) has been pegged to play the late singer in an upcoming movie about her life. Accordingto AllHipHop.com, Solange auditioned for the role earlier this month and found out that she got the part this week.  No confirming or denying from Solo just yet, but it‟s also being said that the project is going to be filmed by the same production company that did “Think Like a Man.”  So is Solange that somebody? (Real Aaliyah fans will catch that) Now I must admit, I‟m a die-hard Aaliyah fan and a bit of a skeptic when it comes to anyone trying to portray her.  That said, I‟m not crazy about Solange (reportedly) getting this role. I haven‟t seen Solo do anything close to acting since “Johnson Family Vacation,”nor have I seen her with her hair laid like Babygirl‟s enough times to even put me in the mind of Aaliyah. Maybe if I squint my eyes…*squints* Nope, still not feeling it. #NoShade  Well whether it‟s true or not, it‟s still worth talking about. What do you guys think? Can Solo pull off Aaliyah‟s allure and side swept bang?  Or the real question is…How long do you think it‟ll be before Timbaland and Missy or Aaliyah‟s fam, comes and kills this rumor and shuts us all up? #RealTea
  • SOLANGE TALKS NEW MUSIC PROJECT  Solange Knowles is not one to sit idle for any lenghty amount of time, and today she released some news that will be very pleasing for her fans. The incredibly talented younger sister of Beyonce, announced that she is working on a new project that will hit our ears sometime in 2014. Solange has been everywhere recently, and the last thing we heard from her was the 2012 release of her dope EP called True. She stated that she is working on new material for an upcoming album and added that she is working with Dave Longstreth of Dirty Projectors and Chairlift drummer Patrick Wimberly, as well as SBTRKT and Drake collaborator Sampha who is also helping with the project.  Judging by that list we are in for something special, but then again, Solange never lets us down. She went to say that “I‟m actually trying to give myself a deadline this time around. One of the pros of being independent is having that space and that time. But it‟s also a major con when you don‟t set aside a deadline and keep going and keep going. When you have a goal in mind you definitely stay motivated. I‟m trying to stay motivated because I know it took four years before my last record came out. That is not happening – it‟s gonna come out next year.” Dope!
  • BUGATTI LEGENDS VEYRON 16.4 GRAND SPORT VITESSE JEAN-PIERRE WIMILLE EDITION  As a tribute to Grand Prix racing‟s most iconic figures, Bugatti has announced its six-part “Bugatti Legends” limited edition collection. All six designs from the Legends collection are based on the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grant Sport Vitesse, and the first is a tribute to historic Grand Prix Motor Racing driver and Bugatti‟s own Jean-Pierre Wimille, who dominated two 24 Hours of Le Mans wins with Bugatti in 1937 and 1939. The car itself draws inspiration from these specific victories, borrowing design aesthetics from the Bugatti 57G Tank that Wimille drove in 1937, and is finished with a French signature blue clear-coated carbon fiber and light Wimille Bleu paintwork. Powered by an 8.0 liter, W16 quad-turbo engine and capable hitting 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds, the Jean-Pierre Wimille edition is a fitting tribute to the driving legend.
