Five Steps to Identify Vintage Clothing

Nowadays, the vintage cloth sellers entered into the market and the market value for
vintage clothing is growing drastically. If the shopkeeper has not enough knowledge
about modern clothing items, it will be sold incorrectly. The sellers must know the basic
tips about modern garments. The following steps would be used to vintage cloth sellers
and also used for buyers:

Step 1: First to check the zip of the dress. It is metal or vinyl one? The metal zips
present at mid 1960’s so the metal zips indicate pre-1970’s dress. Because the vinyl
zips were not used widely on dresses on 1960’s. The location of the zip is more
important. Between 1950’s and 1960’s, the placement of the zip was side of the dress
that moves to the back.

Step 2: The second step is to look at the labels. There are three different kinds of labels
were available such as the markers, size and care label. If you can’t find the first label
then go to search for second label. In 1960’s, the second label indicates the hip size in
inches. The standard sizes used such as 12, 14 etc. After 1960’s it was changed 12 as
10 and 14 as 12. These sizes are equivalent to 1970’s. The second step has the best
label that is care label. It was introduced in mid 1960’s. It only used widely in 1970’s.
The Pure New Wool symbol was only introduced in the 1970s.If any label has been
absence that denotes the dress made at home or it was introduced in 1970’s.

Step 3: Have a glance on the construction of garment. In Vintage dresses, some details
like hook and eye fasteners and poppers to protect the garments. In last century, say
1950’s internal bra straps were widely used by people. In that period, Underskirts were
common; look for net and muslin underskirts, often with metal hoops sewn in the hem
added more volume to the skirts.

Step 4: The fourth level is to look at the fabric. This is more important in dresses. It will
be developed by handing vintage cloths. The famous modern dress fabrics quality is
same as vintage fabrics. When we compared with modern fabrics the difference will be
appeared. There are different types of fabrics used in different duration. In 1950’s rayon
and taffeta were used then polyester, nylon and crimpolene were used in 1960’s. But
Lycra was introduced in the 1980’s.

Step 5: While buying the dress, you should give more importance to style. Ask some
questions in your mind that whether this outfit suits for you or not? But this alone will not
give you better garments. Because lot of vintage styles have been comes into evolution
now. The shoulder pads were very common in the 1940’s. It lost its fame after some
years. In 1980’s, shoulder pads were widely used. The two most popular styles in the
1950’s were the shirtwaist dress, with buttons to the front, a nipped in waist and full
pleated skirt and the wiggle dress with lovely fitted hourglass shape. The 1960’s saw
the introduction of the classic mini skirt and simple shift dress. The maxi dress became
more popular in the late 1960’s and into the 1970’s. The more flamboyant 1970s
demanded more fitted styles with plunging necklines and angel sleeves.

You must follow the above specified steps. This will helps you when buying vintage
cloths and to prevent you from some small mistakes.
