What is Basketball <ul><li>Modern Basketball is a sport in which two teams of 5 trying to score points on the other net by propelling the ball through a 10 foot high net under the game rules </li></ul><ul><li>Points are scored when the ball goes though the net. </li></ul><ul><li>The ball is advanced by dribbling the ball across the court or passing it between teammates </li></ul><ul><li>The ball may not be carried across the court and the game prohibits physical interaction. </li></ul>

Basketball- The Creator <ul><li>In 1891, basketball was created by Dr. James Naismith, who was born and educated in Canada </li></ul><ul><li>He created the game for the YMCA Training College in Springfield, Massachusetts </li></ul><ul><li>It quickly spread throughout USA and Canada </li></ul><ul><li>By 1895 the game was established in several women’s highschools </li></ul><ul><li>The game now has evolved and now is played in more than 200 countries </li></ul>
  4. 4. Basketball Then... <ul><li>There were 13 rules and two peach baskets on each end of the court. They used a soccer ball and there were 9 players on each team </li></ul><ul><li>The first recorded organized game was on January 20, 1892 </li></ul>

Basketball now... <ul><li>Peach baskets were used until 1906, when they were finally replaced with metal hoops </li></ul><ul><li>Further changes were made making the hoops smaller to the ones we know today </li></ul><ul><li>More rules were added and some of the rules were modified </li></ul>

New Technology <ul><li>Sports equipment has become more competitive </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Example new shoes allows the athlete to jump higher, further and faster </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Athletes are able to play at an older age and recover from injuries sooner </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Oxygen tanks </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Special leg surgieries </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>New balls rebound off the ground faster providing more control </li></ul></ul><ul><li>New conception of the game where one can now analyze the game into a much deeper aspects of the game previously incomprehensible </li></ul>

Women in Basketball <ul><li>The WNBA was founded in 1996 as a Women’s counterpart to the NBA </li></ul><ul><li>There are currently 14 teams in the WNBA and more are being added </li></ul><ul><li>However the WNBA players are relatively small scale in comparison with the NBA </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The minimum salary cap for one player is 35 000 per season while the highest paid only earn less than 100 000 </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The average viewership of the WNBA is approximately 413000 per game up from about 346 000 in 2007. (up nearly 20%) </li></ul></ul>
