The presentation introduce the concept of 'academic qualities' for librarians. The problems faced by Indian academic librarians in Karnakata, India is listed and suitable solutions are drafted. The presentation is of the Inaugural session of panel discussion on 'Academic Qualities and Problems of Librarians' held at JSS Women College, Mysore on February 26, 2011

Problems … <ul><li>Support staff – non availability of qualified assistance and sub staff </li></ul><ul><li>Lapse of security for library collection </li></ul><ul><li>Additional responsibility - admission work, maintenance of office file, communication to higher authority, university work, collection of fee, maintenance of day book, invigilation work, etc., </li></ul>

Problems… <ul><li>Deputation to 2 or more colleges </li></ul><ul><li>Book selection – Committee – March Fever </li></ul><ul><li>Lack of time for technical processing </li></ul><ul><li>No Objection Certificate – non-involvement of librarians </li></ul><ul><li>Teaching Staff – overriding of borrowing privileges and transaction hours </li></ul><ul><li>Guest Lectures – No control </li></ul><ul><li>Loss of books by drop outs </li></ul>

Solutions <ul><li>A compendium of GO with suitable explanation by experts </li></ul><ul><li>A library handbook for administration, procedure, privileges and policies should be made for total implementation across the state </li></ul><ul><li>Deputation of librarians should be banned </li></ul><ul><li>Lecture should NOT be involved in stock verification </li></ul>

Solutions … <ul><li>Charge taking and handover procedure should simple as in the case of University and public libraries. </li></ul><ul><li>Single approved software should be used across the staff to achieve union catalogue and uniformity </li></ul><ul><li>No additional responsibility to librarians such as office work </li></ul><ul><li>Promotions should be on par with the teaching staff </li></ul>
  16. 16. Solutions… <ul><li>Books selection should be an initiative by librarian. The teaching community should play the role of recommendation authority not the selection authority for library procurement </li></ul><ul><li>Librarians should be considered as vocational academic staff so that vacation may be used for enhancement of academic qualities </li></ul>
  17. 17. Solutions… <ul><li>Uniform stock verification procedure and policy should be framed </li></ul><ul><li>Chief librarian post should be created in collegiate education and should be in-charge for total quality management and uniformity in library activities. </li></ul>
