Joseph: Faithful Servant

  1. 1. Joseph later had another dream, and he told his brothers, “Listen to what else I dreamed. The sun, the moon, and eleven stars bowed down to me.”
  2. 2. Meanwhile, the merchants had sold Joseph in Egypt to a man named Potiphar, who was the king’s official.
  3. 3. Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar was an officer to the king of Egypt and the captain of the palace guard. He bought Joseph from the merchants who had brought him down there.
  4. 4. The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man. He lived in the house of his master, Potiphar the Egyptian.
  5. 5. Potiphar saw that the Lord was with Joseph and that the Lord made Joseph successful in everything he did.
  6. 6. Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.
  7. 7. So Potiphar was very happy with Joseph and allowed him to be his personal servant. He put Joseph in charge of the house, trusting him with everything he owned.
  8. 8. So Potiphar left Joseph in charge of everything he owned and was not concerned about anything except the food he ate.
  9. 9. Now Joseph was well built and handsome. After some time the wife of Joseph’s master began to desire Joseph, and one day she said to him, “Have sex with me.”
  10. 10. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.
  11. 11. But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
  12. 12. But Joseph refused and said to her, “My master trusts me with everything in his house. He has put me in charge of everything he owns. There is no one in his house greater than I.
  13. 13. He has not kept anything from me except you, because you are his wife.
  14. 14. Marriage should be honored by everyone. And every marriage should be kept pure between husband and wife. God will judge guilty those who commit sexual sins and adultery.
  15. 15. How can I do such wicked thing?
  16. 16. It is a sin against God.”
  17. 17. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit ... ? Therefore honor God with your body.
  18. 18. The woman talked to Joseph every day, but he refused to have sex with her or even spend time with her.
  19. 19. Can you build a fire in your lap and not burn your pants? Can you walk barefoot on hot coals and not get blisters?
It’s the same when you have sex with your neighbor’s wife: Touch her and you’ll pay for it. No excuses.
  20. 20. One day Joseph went into the house to do his work as usual and was the only man in the house at that time. His master’s wife grabbed his coat and said to him, “Have sex with me.”
  21. 21. But Joseph left his coat in her hand and ran out of the house.
  22. 22. So run away from sexual sin. It involves the body in a way that no other sin does.
  23. 23. When she saw that Joseph had left his coat in her hands and had run outside, she called to the servants in her house and said, “Look! This Hebrew slave was brought here to shame us. He came in and tried to have sex with me, but I screamed. My scream scared him and he ran away, but he left his coat with me.”
  24. 24. She kept his coat until her husband came home, and she told him the same story.
  25. 25. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit ... ? Therefore honor God with your body.
  26. 26. When Joseph’s master heard what his wife said Joseph had done, he became very angry. So Potiphar arrested Joseph and put him into the prison where the king’s prisoners were put. And Joseph stayed there in the prison.
