  1. 1. • “The LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the people of Israel, that they take for me a contribution. From every man whose heart moves him you shall receive the contribution for me. And this is the contribution that you shall receive from them: gold, silver, and bronze, blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, goats’ hair, tanned rams’ skins, goatskins, acacia wood, oil for the lamps, spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense, onyx stones, and stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece. And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst. Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make it.” - Exodus 25:1–9

Function (shadow) • People brought unblemished lamb to sacrifice and cover sins before a Holy God Fulfillment (substance) • Christ is the sinless lamb – final atonement • Pilate stated three times that he found no fault in Jesus (John 18:38, John 19:4, John 19:6) God’s Word • “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” - John 1:29 • “And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” - Hebrews 10:10

Function (shadow) • After killing the animals priests would use to wash hands and feet Fulfillment (substance) • We are to submit daily confession of sins in order to maintain a good standing and relationship with God God’s Word • “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. ” - 1 John 1:7–10

  5. 5. Function (shadow) • Provided light inside the Temple Fulfillment (substance) • Jesus is the light of the world God’s Word • “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” ” - John 8:12 • “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” ” - John 9:5

Function (shadow) • 12 loaves of bread served as a reminder of God’s provision to the 12 tribes of Israel Fulfillment (substance) • Jesus is the bread of life God’s Word • “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. ” - John 6:35 • “As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.’” - John 6:57–59a

Function (shadow) • Special fragrance offered up to God along with prayers of the high priest Fulfillment (substance) • Prayers of Christians are sweet smelling incense to God. • Christ intercedes as our high priest God’s Word • “And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.” - Revelation 5:8 • “But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation)” - Hebrews 9:11

Function (shadow) • Separated the Holy place from the Holy of Holies • Separated holy God from sinful people Fulfillment (substance) • Christ has removed the barrier and enabled us to approach God God’s Word • “And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.” - Matthew 27:51 • “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,” - 1 Peter 3:18

Function (shadow) • Stone tablets with 10 commandments, a jar of manna, budding rod of Aaron Fulfillment (substance) • Law of Christ written on hearts, prayer of provision in Christ’s name, and resurrection power of God (Jesus and us) God’s Word • “They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them” - Romans 2:15 • “that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.” - Philippians 3:10–11

Function (shadow) • High priest would sprinkle blood and God would look down and accept sacrifice of people without looking at their sins Fulfillment (substance) • Jesus’ blood bestows grace upon us by the removal of our sins God’s Word • “Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” - Hebrews 9:22
  11. 11. The shadow becomes… Ark of the Covenant Veil “Do you not know that Altar of Incense you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit Table of Showbread dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s Candle Stand temple, God will destroy him. For God’s Bronze Laver temple is holy, and you Brazen altar are that temple.” - 1 Corinthians 3:16–17
