  • 2. Word Association • What words come to mind when you hear the word “Christian”? • What words come to mind when you hear the word “disciple”? • What words come to mind when you hear the word “childlike”?
  • 3. Childlike… • What metaphorical characteristic of a child is the Bible speaking of? – Troublesome? Naïve? Ignorant? Naiveté? Simplicity? Blind resolve?
  • 4. Bible Study 1. Proverbs 3:13 2. 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22 3. Ephesians 4:14 4. Hebrews 5:11-13 5. 1 Peter 2:1-3 6. Mark 10:13-16 7. Mark 9:33-37 8. Matthew 18:3-5
  • 5. Conflict or Compliment? • "How blessed is the man who finds wisdom and the man who gains understanding" (Proverbs 3:13) • 12Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. 16Be joyful always; 17pray continually; 18give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 19Do not put out the Spirit's fire; 20do not treat prophecies with contempt. 21Test everything. Hold on to the good. 22Avoid every kind of evil. (1 Thessalonians 5:12- 22)
  • 6. Conflict or Compliment? • 14Thenwe will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. (Ephesians 4:14) • 11We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. 12In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. (Hebrews 5:11-13) • 1Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. (1 Peter 2:1-3)
  • 7. Biblical References • 13People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." 16And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them. (Mark 10:13-16) • 33They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the road?" 34But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. 35Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all 36He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37"Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.“ (Mark 9:33-37)
  • 8. So what does it mean to be “childlike” exactly? • 3And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5"And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. (Matthew 18:3-5)
