  • 2. Definition
    • “‘ Educational Networking’ is the use of social networking technologies for educational purposes” (Hargadon, 2007).

      • Maintain a profile with current biographical information and pictures.
    Publish current status. View other members’ current status and messages from them. Chat with other members and comment on their updates. Basics of Social Networking Find others with common interests.
  • 4. Social Networking in Education
    • “ The phrase ‘social networking’ can carry some negative connotations for educators,” so the interchangeable phrase “educational networking” has become popular in school settings (Hargadon, 2007).
  • 5. Social Networking in Education
    • Educational networks exist for everyone at a school: teachers, students, librarians, technologists, parents, and administrators.
  • 6. Social Networking in Education
    • Some encourage interaction among these groups.
    • Others are narrowly tailored for one group or even subsets of one group.

    • Some are created by corporations with educational interests.
    • Others are created by group members on social network hosting sites such as Ning or Diigo.

    • Some are updated with new content almost continuously.
    • Others are updated rarely.
  • 9. My Social Networking
    • Background
      • I am technologically savvy.
        • I have maintained a blog for parent communication since August 2008.
        • I use a wiki to post classroom content, assignments, activities, and expectations.
        • My students use web 2.0 tools to create and manage classroom projects.
      • Although I have a Facebook account that I access a few times a month, I was not a member of any educational networks until this week, when I joined some for this assignment.

    • The most notable of the networks I found this week:
      • PBS Teachers
      • NCTE Ning
      • Edmodo
      • Classroom 2.0.
    • For this assignment, I compared PBS Teachers with Classroom 2.0.
  • 11. PBS for Teachers
    • “ Multimedia resources & Professional Development for America's PreK-12 educators.”
    • Tailored to teachers with many backgrounds.
    • Can narrow content by grade range and subject taught.
    • Timely lessons. Currently offering robust, ready to use lessons on Haiti and other current topics.
    • Created by a corporation (PBS).
    • Encourages socializing via chat, discussions, and blogs.
    • Updated constantly with high-quality resources.
    • Customizable profile page.
    • Feels professional with slick, high quality graphics.
    • User-friendly, although I had trouble uploading a profile picture.
    • Anyone can join.
    • Supported by advertising.
  • 12. Classroom 2.0
    • “ The social network for those interested in Web 2.0 and Collaborative Technologies.”
    • Narrowly tailored to teachers using collaborative technologies. Can join even narrower subgroups.
    • Contains valuable “raw” information, not packaged as lessons.
    • Created by members using Ning.
    • Encourages socializing via chat, discussions, and blogs.
    • Over 36,000 members.
    • Updated constantly with high-quality resources.
    • User-friendly.
    • Accessible by mobile phone.
    • Feels somewhat “homemade.”
    • Members must be approved (took about three hours to go through, on a Saturday).
    • No ads.
