      • THE INSTITUTIONAL BASE
      • founded in 1961 by an alcoholic who wanted to 'get better‘. Kustaa Arvo Parkkila, Reino Ahonen and Veijo Salovaara
      • Supportive accommodation centre for elderly alcohol addicted
      • Address – Kotkankatu 14-16 B, 00510 Helsinki
      • Unit of Suojapirtti Ry (Private Sector)
      • Helsinki Municipality buys the services
      • they have 46 resident places; 1 social worker, 1 nurse, 5 instructors (about to have one practical nurse) and the other staff

      • THE SERVICE USERS
      • Elderly alcohol addicted
      • don't work anymore, physical & mental health problems, probably unable to get rid of the addiction, excluded( family & society).
      • Alternative Shelter they can’t go to ordinary care homes
      • To support and care them as long they live.

      • THE SERVICE USERS
      • Social Services Department evaluates these elderly alcoholics and decides their place to huoltokoti
      • the huoltokoti gets all the medical records etc so they are able to give accurate care for these men
      • these men
      • have lost their entire social network due to the addiction problem their families have left them and don't wish to be in any contact any longer,
      • don't have that network of friends and colleagues

      • THE SERVICES
      • Life support and care support the men to be as active as they can of that life they have left support them to operate sort of independently and have as normal of a life as possible these men get meals every day, accommodation and activities, health services and the possibility for support from the social worker, parish worker efforts to help them regain family relations
      • in exchange they can’t use alcohol inside the home nor come there 'drunk'.

      • THE NETWORK CHAIN
      • Kallio health centre    the men are taken into the health centre every now and then
      • psychiatric clinic        those men with mental health problems such as schizophrenia get their medication
      • Alppila (local) parish    the church worker comes to talk to the men and give 'spiritual treatment'
      • other health service providers such as physiotherapist (these additional services the organization buys)

      • ROLE AND SIGNIFICANCE
      • A distinct role in the welfare of these people
      • Inspiring developmental work able to support these people in long term they come to the huoltokoti depressed, badly addicted and with no connections to family or friends
      • then after a decade or so he is sober and has gained a relationship to the family and so on
      • this process and these 'victories‘
