Pentheus was opposed to the Dionysus (God of wine; the inspirer of ritual madness and ecstasy) cult.
So Dionysus sent a group of Bacchantes (female worshippers) insane, and made Pentheus spy on their mountain side ceremony
Penthus was discovered by the women, and was frantically ripped to shreds by them, one of which was his own mother!
