  1. 1. TRAFFIC INFORMATION SERVICE BASED ON VEHICLE ADHOC NETWORK Introduction: The monitoring and control of city traffic is becoming a major problem in many countries. With the ever increasing number of vehicles on the road, the Traffic Monitoring Authority has to find new methods of overcoming such a problem. We propose a traffic information service for which traffic data are collected over ad-hoc networks from neighbor vehicles, processed to minimize the data size, and eventually provided to its destination. The proposed scheme simply relies on the existing navigation systems in vehicles and wireless communication devices for vehicle-to-vehicle communication, rather than on a separately established server. It allows collecting and analyzing traffic status of large areas without incorporating separated monitoring systems, e.g., probe cars and enables to provide accurate traffic information to drivers in timely manner. Existing System: Present Traffic Light Controllers (TLC) is based on microcontroller and microprocessor. These TLC have limitations because it uses the pre-defined hardware, which is functioning according to the program that does not have the flexibility of modification on real time basis. Due to the fixed time intervals of green, orange and red signals the waiting time is more and car uses more fuel. Proposed System: This project “Intelligent traffic controller” makes use of Networks along with Embedded Technology. Thus, optimization of traffic light control increases road capacity and traffic flow, and can prevent traffic congestions. This is a unique feature of this project which is very useful to car drivers to take an alternate route in case of congestion. The main objective for this project is to design a program and implement hardware of intelligent traffic light system suitable for real life implementations. This project also aims to design a safe and efficient traffic flow, to assign the right way and minimizes the delay or
  2. 2. waiting time at road. The information about congestion on road or possible alternate routes can also be informed to car drivers through information collecting centre. The service scenario is as follows: (1) Vehicle C is on the way to the destination; (2) Vehicle A has met with jammed area. Since vehicle A went through the jammed area, it has obtained the traffic information and update that in the information collecting centre (3) Vehicle B hasn’t met with any traffic jam in its way. The traffic information that vehicle B has obtained is likely to be normal since it did not pass through the jammed area, it has obtained the traffic information and update that in the information collecting centre (4) Vehicle A, B, and C regularly transmit the traffic information on their respective paths; (5) If information collecting devices are incorporated on the road, they can serve to retrieve, process, and regularly transmit the traffic information to users; (6) Based on the delivered information from vehicle A and B, vehicle C can be aware of the traffic jam on the path of vehicle A in advance; and thus, (7) Vehicle A can choose the right path avoiding the heavy traffic.
