How Integration of Systems Will Bring Concrete Benefits to the Earth and to Mankind

Presentation made to the Hong Kong Bio- and Eco-Energy Industry Assocation, Dec 14, 2011. The world is at an uncertain divide, with the East on the rise and the West on the decline. Excesses of capitalism, and escalating costs of social benefits brought imbalances to the world, potentially pitching the young generation against the old. Will the vision of a green planet be shattered because it is unaffordable and too much of an economic burden on mankind? It is more imperative than ever that efforts to clean up the planet be based on the idea of integrating, automating and optimizing past systems which were operated in isolation from one another. New and concrete benefits will be turned up by innovative ways to explore synergistic relationships among proximate systems and to optimize their joint operation. An example can be found in bringing together systems of waste treatment, electricity production, and steam or heat production. However, real benefits must exceed real costs before the world will remain committed to the path of a green planet.

  • The Occupy movement is an international protest movement which is primarily directed against economic and social inequality. The first Occupy protest to be widely covered was Occupy Wall Street in New York City, taking place on September 17, 2011. By October 9, Occupy protests had taken place or were ongoing in over 95 cities across 82 countries, and over 600 communities in the United States. As of December 1 the Meetup page &amp;quot;Occupy Together&amp;quot; listed 2,686 Occupy communities worldwide.

    6. 6. Is the Jury Still Out on Global Warming? http:// www.berkeleyearth.org/movies.php Source: Berkeley Earth (www.berkeleyearth.org) Despite 97% scientific agreement, 50% of people are skeptical about global warming. But data show that the avg. surface temperature has risen 1.4 degrees in last 100 years.
    7. 7. Is the Jury Still Out on Global Warming? <ul><li>2010 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences report found that more than 97% of active climate scientists agreed with past findings of widespread evidence that global warming is happening . </li></ul><ul><li>A national poll (US) of 751 people finds that 66% responded, &quot;`there is a lot of disagreement among scientists about whether or not global warming is happening' (45%), `most scientists think that global warming is not happening' (5%) or they `do not know enough to say' (16%).“ [50% of people believe that global warming is not happening or scientists have a lot of disagreement.] </li></ul><ul><li>Learning that global warming seems to be happening ( a roughly 1.4 degree increase in global average surface temperatures over the last century according to a 2010 National Academy of Science report), shifts people with &quot;disengaged“ views about global warming into seeing it as a priority . </li></ul>Reported by USA Today, Nov 28, 2011 Publicity with Truthful Information can change public Consensus!
    8. 8. Is the “Occupy” movement a consciousness shift led by the next generation? <ul><li>I love that they are spontaneous, leaderless and open-ended. I love that the protesters refuse to issue specific demands beyond a forceful call for economic justice . ….. I love that there are no rules, just tendencies. </li></ul><ul><li>I love that when Occupy Wall Street was denied permission to use bullhorns , demonstrators came up with an alternative straight out of Monty Python, or maybe “The Flintstones”: Have everyone within earshot repeat a speaker’s words, verbatim and in unison, so the whole crowd can hear. It works — and sounds tremendously silly.  </li></ul><ul><li>Most of all, I love that the Occupy protests arise at just the right moment and are aimed at just the right target. This could be the start of something big and important. </li></ul>“ Occupy Wall Street and its kindred protests around the country are inept, incoherent and hopelessly quixotic. God, I love ’em.” Eugene Robinson, Oct 11, 2011, Washington Post opinion writer.
    9. 9. Is the “Occupy” movement a consciousness shift led by the next generation? <ul><li>Primarily directed against economic  and  social inequality .  </li></ul><ul><li>Occupy Wall Street in New York City, on September 17, 2011. </li></ul><ul><li>By October 9, Occupy protests in over 95 cities across 82 countries.  </li></ul><ul><li>“ We are the 99% ” refers to the vast concentration of wealth among the top 1% of income earners compared to the other 99%, and indicates that most people are paying the price for the mistakes of a tiny minority. </li></ul>
    10. 10. Is the “Occupy” movement a consciousness shift led by the next generation? Source: Wikipedia. A chart showing the disparity in income distribution in the United States. [38] [39]  Wealth inequality and income inequality have been central concerns among OWS protesters. [40] [41] [42]  CBO data shows that in 1980, the top 1% earned 9.1% of all income, while in 2006 they earned 18.8% of all income. [43]
    11. 11.
