  • 1. Classification Grouping Living Things Classification: grouping things together using a set of rules
  • 2. Grouping
    • group by similarities and differences
    • scientists classify to make things easier to find and share info
    • all living things can be classified into one of five kingdoms
  • 3. Kingdom
    • Kingdom: the largest group into which living things can be classified
      • moneran: one celled and no nucleus - bacterium
      • protist: one celled and has a nucleus - paramecia
      • fungi: most are many celled, have a nuclei, look like plants, but cannot make their own food - mushroom
      • plants and animals make up the other two kingdoms - grass, flowers, cats, and dogs
  • 4. Smaller Groups
    • characteristics used to make smaller and smaller groups
      • each smaller group has a name
      • most specific group has only 1 type of living thing
    • name animals with labels of 2 smallest classification groups
      • genus - 2nd smallest group
      • species - smallest group
        • two names combined - cat: felis domesticus
  • 5. Summary
    • scientists organize living things to make studying and discussing them easier
    • all living things are classified into one of five kingdoms

      • fungi
      • plants
      • animals
    • five kingdoms divided into small groups
