  • 1. Phoenicia The word Phoenicia came from the Greek word“Phoenix” meaning purple-red because a purple- red dye waas produced here. The Phoenicians were merchants/traders and colonized in certain strategic areas in today’s Syria, Cyprus, Libya, Tunisia, Italy, Algeria,Morocco and Spain. Even though they moved into foreign land, they were never warlords.Although the Phoenicians used cuneiform in whatwe call Ugaritic, they also produced a script oftheir own. The Phoenicians Alphabetic script of 22 letters was used at Babylon as early as the 15th century BCE
