-It weakens the immune system until the immune system starts failing and then it is extremely easy for the body to catch diseases. This is called AIDS: Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
-HIV works by killing T cells in the body, which are antibodies that the body uses to fight off viruses, bacteria, or any other foreign invaders in the body
Highly Active Anti-retroviral Therapy: HAART
-HAART keep the levels of HIV down in the blood by targeting HIV replication. However, the HIV in the body comes back in full strength if the therapy is taken away. This therapy has given many affected patients longer lives.
-HAART is a combination of several anti-retroviral drugs. Sometimes anti-retroviral drugs do not work because of drug resistant HIV.
- After HIV has progressed to diagnosable AIDS, the average survival time with antiretroviral therapy is estimated to be more than 5 years. Without antiretroviral therapy, someone who has AIDS usually dies within a year.
