Work Based Learning

  1. 1. Work Based LearningIntro-This report is about my personal development I have undertaken. I have made learning outcomes toget the most out of my work placement to help me develop my skills. This report will highlight thestages I have gone through to help get the best out of my work placement to and help get the job Iwant at the end of university. There are numerous stages that I have gone through leading up to thework placement and also planning how I will carry on using the skills after work placement to makeme be more successful.Process review-For my personal development I went on a work placement to City bloc an indoor rock climbing placein Leeds. In order to get the best out of the placement I made learning outcomes to state what Iwanted to achieve and in appendix 4 is the first learning outcomes I had made for which I wanted toachieve in my work based learning. These were initial learning outcomes which I made during theplanning for work based learning section which was before I had sorted out where I was going to goon placement so they weren’t very specific. I had based my learning outcomes on work I had donewhich looked at my personal skills including strengths and weaknesses and how I assessed thesesections which is shown in appendix 5. By looking at these had a rough idea of what I wanted toimprove and use in my work based learning but they weren’t specific.I looked at numerous possibilities for where I could go for my work placement as shown I appendix6. I chose to go to City Bloc indoor rock climbing for the placement but this meant I needed tomodify my learning outcomes. The learning outcomes that I have changed to are in appendix 7. Ikept some of the learning outcomes as I feel they are what I want to achieve from my placement. The learning outcomes I have kept are to be able to be involved in all aspects of the sports business. This is important to me as I want to know which aspect of the business I prefer most. I have also keptthe learning outcome of improving my entrepreneurial skills in particular my creative. This is becauseI have identified this is a weakness through the entrepreneurial graduate skills work booklet ofcreativity so I wanted to improve this in my work experience. There are learning outcomes that Ihave updated the original ones weren’t specific enough and I also wanted to add new outcomeswhich would increase my personal development further.I added the learning outcome of developing an understanding of advertising in a successful sportsbusiness because advertising is one of my main areas of interests to me in the sport industry. Theway sports organisations use advertising is something I would like to find out as I will want to go intothe advertising section of sports organisations when I graduate. According to Blair (2011) advertisingis very important because this is to increase brand awareness and increase profit from more peoplegetting involved. This is important as the advertising is an imperative aspect of a sports business tobe successful so this is an area I want to go into.I also added the learning outcome of understanding how working in a team can benefit successfulsports business because it is very important to be able to use team work in the working environmentbecause Levi (2010) suggests it is the dependence to rely on others to be successful. Team work isimportant in any industry so it is important to be able to show I have these skills. According toHardingham (1995) a team is where everyone is working for a shared goal. The new learning outcomes are specific now because they target the specific goals that I want toachieve and will help me develop my skills more. The new outcomes are relevant to my personal
  2. 2. targets and also relevant to my work placement. This is because City Bloc gave me the opportunityto advertise a charity event that they are holding which will allow me to be able to see how sportsbusinesses use advertising to be successful.I would personally approach this section differently in future as I did not initially decide whichspecific areas I wanted to be use for my assessment. This is such as not having the advertising in theinitial learning outcomes or having team work in the initial learning outcomes. I think the work basedlearning module could be adapted so there is more tutor contact time which would allow for morefeedback on the way the learning outcomes can be amended best for the work placements.Learning outcomes-The work experience was very useful because of the great opportunity to be involved in all areas ofthe sports business I was also able to run the advertising of a charity rock climbing event. I was ableto find out all the necessary jobs and roles needed in the work experience as is shown in the learninglog which I found very useful as I would like to work in the sports industry in future. Whetten andCameron’s (2007:9) suggested “Management skills consist of identifiable sets of actions thatindividuals perform and lead to certain outcomes. Skills can be observed by others, unlike attributesthat are purely mental or are embedded in personality.” This shows that you can obtain skills byobserving them and I observed what it took to be a leader in the sports business and lead indifferent aspects of the business such as undertake jobs that I didn’t like such as the cleaning up butthey are every important in order to be successful and pass all health and safety requirements.Hopkins and Putnam (1993) state that the task of meeting the specialised needs of individuals andgroups presents one of the greatest challenges to sports managers and providers of adventureprogrammes, for if the ‘match’ is not achieved correctly, the effectiveness may be mis-educative oreven damaging. This shows that sports managers have got to be able to give the right experience tothe participant such as being safe but challenging or having the sense of danger in the activity andthis will only be done if all the element of the business is running correctly. According to Smith andStewart’s (2010) sports management is becoming more like running any other business. This showsthat the skills needed in the sports management are similar to the ones in other businesses so iwould be able to uses these skills in other areas and not just sports industry. I used found the workexperience very good at being able to achieve my learning outcomes as I was able to use all mylearning outcomes in some way during the work experience. This is shown in the learning log inappendix 5. The learning log goes into detail about what my work experience did to help me get mylearning outcomes on a day to day basis. The learning outcome that I feel went the most successful was the understanding the advertising ina sports business. This is because I have the opportunity to advertise for the charity event that CityBloc was holding. In appendix 8 there is an example of the poster I made for the charity rockclimbing event. As you can see on the poster the charity Headway was one of the contacts that I wasusing for my advertising. I feel that one of the main benefits from using this learning outcome in mywork placement was that I was able to use it to build my networking skills. In appendix 9 it showswho I contacted the people for the advertising of the charity event. One effective strategy tomanage one’s career is networking, which refers to developing and maintaining personalrelationships in order to facilitate the exchange of work related resources (Forret and Dougherty,2001; Power, 2010; Wolff and Moser, 2010). Studies show that networking is positively related to ahost of vocational outcomes, for example, career success (Forret and Dougherty, 2004; Wolff andMoser, 2009), job search (Granovetter, 1973; van Hoye et al., 2009; Wanberg et al., 2000), and jobperformance (Thompson, 2005). This is why I feel the advertising was so important that I did it as notonly did I learn how to make the posters to advertise the event but I also was also able to makecontacts and network effectively.
  3. 3. Another learning outcome that I have added for the work based learning to be for successful in thedeveloping an understanding of how working in a team can benefit a successful business throughexperience. Leitch (2006) argued basic skills, such as literacy and numeracy, and generic skills, suchas teamwork and communication, are applicable in most jobs. This is important as the skill ofteamwork in any organisation especially in the sports industry with the added risk factor so I felt Ineeded to incorporate this into my goals such as the use of interdependence which Levi (2010)suggests is the dependence to rely on others to be successful. According to Mckenzie (2000) theautonomy of individuals and personal relationships are aspects of the group that contribute toachievement. This shows that I need to be able to work as a team to be able to be successful and getthe best out of the work experience. In appendix 1 the student evaluation shows that I was able tocomplete this learning outcome as my work experience supervisor scored me 9 out of 10 andcommented that I interacted well with every staff member. Group members also learn to cooperatewith one another and capitalize on the strengths of each individual (Hopkins & Putnam, 1993) andfrom the evidence of what my learning mentor said about my work experience this shows that I havebeen able to do this.I feel that my learning outcome of developing my creativity skills went successful in the work basedlearning as well. According to Runco (2007) creativity helps people adapt. I had to adapt to a newworking environment and adapt to do the advertising for city blocs charity event which I was to takecontrol of. Being in a new environment allows participants to gain new perspectives on familiarenvironments argues Walsh & Golins (1976) and gives them the freedom to experiment (Kimball &bacon, 1993). I felt this is what happened in my work based learning as I was able to come up withnew creative ideas for the poster and emails that I sent which is shown in appendix 8. I was able tocome up with innovative ideas for the best way to create the posters to make them stand out and bethe most successful.I have learned a lot from my coaching sessions as it has made me think clearly what the goals arethat I needed to achieve. The coaching sessions made me look in depth what are the areas that I amlooking to develop and what I am planning to do to make this possible for me develop this area. Ifound that it made things clearer what I was going to do to structure my work to get the most out ofthe work placement. I feel the coaching was good because it helped me reflect on the things I gotout of the placement in appendix 11 it shows the coaching sections that I went through with rob.According to Luecke( 2004) coaching is a form of developing personal skills and I feel that by doingthe coaching I have been able to develop and it has also made my learning targets more specific towhat I want which has also helped me get the most out of the work experience. Marquard & Loan(2006) argue that coaching is a way to develop the goals in order to get the best out of thesituations.Action plan-With doing my work based learning I found it was very successful to develop personally. As I foundthis so useful I decided to carry on my personal development by setting more targets that I want toachieve in future so that I can develop even more.Goals after placement-short term- my long term goal is to increase my creative skills. I feel this is important as I am going toneed this to overcome problems. Specific-I have looked at ways of being able to use the creativity to come up with new ways to deal with problems by developing ways in which to advertise the charity event. I want to
  4. 4. be able to be creative in thinking of more ways to advertise for the charity event again as it is rescheduled for April Measurable- I will be able to measure the creativity by how I have been able to use new ideas for advertising the charity event and new ways in which the event could be run Realistic- this is realistic as I already offered advice on how the event will be run and how it will be advertised. Achievable- this is achievable as I will be able make the event as I already have shown I have been creative with it. Time- this will need to be done before the event in April.Midterm goals– my midterm goal is to be able to develop my advertising skills as I am going to needas I would like to get a job in this section of the business. Specific-I have looked at ways of being able to develop my advertising skills in order to gain the skills needed to get a job from this. Measurable- I will be able to measure how I am doing in the advertising section as I am still doing the advertising for the charity event as it has been rescheduled for April so I will be helping to advertising for the event. Realistic- the aim is realistic as I have already been able to do advertising for city bloc but I will need to do more to make the charity event happen Achievable- the goal is achievable as I have already been doing advertising but I will need to increase the amount that I have been doing adverting for the event. Time- the time for the event is to happen in April so I will need to have done the advertising for thenLong term – my long term goal is to be able to use my skill of learning kinaesthetically. I feel that thisis a skill that I need to be able to use effectively as this is the way a learn the best. Specific-I have looked at ways of being able to use the kinaesthetic learning and I need to be able to learn by doing things. This was shown in the work based learning as when I was give tasks to do I was able to do them such as teaching the children how to climb. Measurable-I will be able to measure how much I have learned by testing myself on what things I can do. Realistic-the goal will like to be able to achieve are to make things easier for me to learn and even though kinaesthetic learning involves moving around and I learn best through that I have found through looking at Tham (2009) that by highlighting will also help kinaesthetic learners to learn Achievable- this will be achievable to highlight key points and will be able to let me visually see the key points quickly and easily so I can know what I need to do Time- this will be a long term goal that I will not change the type of learner I am so I will have to find ways in which I can help myself learn.
  5. 5. ConclusionI found the work based learning very useful as I learned a lot of through working in a properenvironment. skills that have helped me develop personally. I have found that it was really goodworking in the sports business environment as this is an area that I would like to go into in future. So I feel that the coaching has helped a lot in clarifying what m goals are and how I will go aboutachieving them. I feel that I have developed my learning skills a large amount but I still need todevelop more so have the action plan that I have targets to achieve for the short, mid and long termto be able to keep developing personally.Appendices-Appendix 1This is the feedback sheet that I got from the work placement supervisor

  12. 12. Hi Stuart yes well I have come up with some outcomes and I have tried to make them specific to the placement I will be doing and also split them into career, personal and academic fields. 20th June 2011Stu WrightWhat learning outcomes have you changed to make them specific to these areas?20th June 2011 Robert Sonczak Well for the personal aspect I came up with a learning outcome to find out exactly what is needed and required for the day to day running of a gym within the leisure and fitness industry. 20th June 2011Stu WrightThat sounds a good idea. That seems more specific to your placement. Have you made any more changes? That youthink you would help you before you take on your placement?20th June 2011 Robert Sonczak Yes well when I decided where I was going for my placement I decided to alter my career learning objectives from more general to more specific for the industry I want to work in. 20th June 2011Stu WrightWhat ways have you made it more specific and what industry do you want to work in?20th June 2011 Robert Sonczak I have made it more specific by saying in my learning outcomes the area that I want to work on for example I said I would like to work in the management area of the gym that I will go to for my work experience. 20th June 2011Stu WrightThat is good I think that will help you more now you have updated your learning outcomes.20th June 2011 Robert Sonczak Thanks.
