Information on Dulse <ul><li>Rich, Dark Purple Seaweed, Known as the best seaweed in the World. </li></ul><ul><li>Natural conditions of the shores and tides allow for quality control </li></ul><ul><li>Dulse can be picked when the Tide is low, giving pickers a two hour gap to pick. </li></ul><ul><li>Harvested from Spring to Fall. </li></ul><ul><li>Very nutrishious; contains almost as much Vitamin C as an orange, plus many others. </li></ul><ul><li>Regenerates fully in two weeks, making it impossible to over pick </li></ul><ul><li>“ Dulsers”, or Dulse pickers are controlled by companies when picking commerically, though the majority of people pick for peronal use. </li></ul><ul><li>Dried Dulse flakes is used dominatly as a replacement for Salt. </li></ul>

Roland’s Sea Vegetables Grand Manan <ul><li>One of the leading suppliers in Canada of Dulse. </li></ul><ul><li>Sell Kelp and Periwinkles from New Brunswick as well. </li></ul><ul><li>Maintain small cottage business, do not want bigger corperations buying off them. </li></ul><ul><li>Buy about $100,000 worth of Dulse a year. </li></ul><ul><li>Pay Dulsers 4.25/lb for Dried Dulse, with a ratio of 8:1 for wet to dried. </li></ul>

Harvesting of Dulse <ul><li>Picked in two hour time frame </li></ul><ul><li>Pick above the root to allow for continous growing. </li></ul><ul><li>Held in plastic bags until brought onto land. </li></ul><ul><li>Laid out most typically on larger stones to dry. </li></ul><ul><li>Requires a sunny day for drying, usually a good six hours. </li></ul><ul><li>Fresh water from rain or mist can leach out sea salt and alter taste of Dulse, rendering it useless. </li></ul>
