    1. 1. REFLECTIONS ON THE EARTHQUAKE IN ABRUZZO. LESSONS LEARNED 06/04/2009
    2. 2. <ul><li>Abruzzo is located in central portion of Italy </li></ul><ul><li>Territory 65% mountainous 35% hilly countryside. </li></ul><ul><li>The surface area is 10794 Km 2 , while the population density is 124,4 ab./Km 2 </li></ul><ul><li>Mountains: Gran Sasso 2914 m La Maiella 2795 m </li></ul><ul><li>T he main rivers: the Aterno-Pescara and the Sangro ehich drain toward the Adriatic Sea, while the Liri drains in the Tirreno. </li></ul>Abruzzo Region: geography.
    3. 3. <ul><li>L'Aquila is the capital of the region </li></ul><ul><li>Pescara is the most populated city </li></ul><ul><li>Chieti and Teramo are other provinces in the region </li></ul><ul><li>Total Regional Population: 1.334.675 abitants as of December 31, 2008. </li></ul>Regione Abruzzo: geografia.

Climate <ul><li>Two principal climatesi: the first is that along the coast , and the second is that of the mainland . </li></ul><ul><li>Temperature: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>8 – 12° in the mountain region </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>12 – 16* along the coast </li></ul></ul>Agriculture There are approx. 83000 farms; l’80% of these sell their own products. Breeding has had an important role particularly that of ovine breeding. Industry Small and medium sized enterprises are particularly developed along the coastal region Tourism Is growingg along the coastal region in the summer months and in the mountain regions in the winter season

Prior seismic events in Abruzzo <ul><li>In the months of January and Febuary there were various tremors (the most violent occurred Feb. 2), that had about 8000 victims. </li></ul><ul><li>January 13 1915 ( 7 on the Richter scale), 9.238 victims; in the remaining rest of Marsica regions 20.000 victims for a total of approx. 30 thousand wounded. Most of the wounded were transfered to the hospitals of Rome and the “Casa Famiglia Regina Elena” hospitalized the orphans of the earthquake . </li></ul>

April 6 2009 h 3:32 <ul><li>5,8 on the Richter Scale , Moment Magnitude of 6,3 and a depth of 8,8 Km. </li></ul><ul><li>Epicenter was located between L’Aquila, Lucoli and Tornimparte. </li></ul><ul><li>N umber of victims 308 </li></ul><ul><li>N umber of wounded approx. 1500 </li></ul><ul><li>Homeless approx. 70.000. </li></ul>

April 6, 2009: the damages <ul><li>Hundreds of buildings were either completely or partially destroyed </li></ul><ul><li>T housands of buildings were declared uninhabitable </li></ul><ul><li>Municipalities mainly affected are about 20 </li></ul><ul><li>L’ Aquila: the historical center was destroyed, Public Administration buildings were destroyed or rendered unusable. </li></ul><ul><li>I n the town of Onna: 50% of the homes were destroyed, and 50% unuseable </li></ul><ul><ul><li>41 deaths, which was 12% of the entire population. </li></ul></ul>

April 6, 2009: the response <ul><li>E mergency services were coordinated by “Protezione Civile” and the Italian Red Cross </li></ul><ul><li>Ambulance services “118” was organized through the Operational Headquaters of Teramo. </li></ul><ul><li>The Hospital San Salvatore was evacuated within 6 hrs of the onset of the tremors. </li></ul><ul><li>Realizzation of 2 PMA </li></ul><ul><ul><li>1 wqs run by ARES Marche, located near Hospital San Salvatore, operative after 22h </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>1 run by Italian Red Cross togelther with the “118” of Teramo at Piazza d’Armi operative after 20 hrs. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Availability of emergency equipment offered by various volunteer Associations. </li></ul>

    10. 10. <ul><li>Field Hospital “San Salvatore”: initial emergency services more than 200 hospitalizzations </li></ul><ul><li>Follow up ambulatory activity: </li></ul>Ares Marche 5000 emergency visits.
