    13. A Brief History of Zoos
      • Ancient Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome built zoos to entertain their rulers
      • During medieval times, aristocrats (wealthy classes) added animal collections to their gardens
      • In the 18 th century, many of these animal collections became public attractions
      • Public zoological gardens became common in many world cities in the 19 th century
      • Modern, research- and conservation-oriented zoos were founded in the 20 th century
    14. Functions of a Modern Zoo
      • Four key functions
        • Conservation  zoos help to protect animals
        • Education  zoos teach the public about nature
        • Research  zoos let scientists study animals
        • Recreation  zoos are a place to have fun
      • Discussion
        • Which function do you think is most important?
        • Do most cities build zoos for recreation or for science? Why?
    15. The Animal Welfare Debate
      • Animal-rights activists claim zoos harm animals in several ways
        • Zoos may be too small, especially for large animals
        • Zoo revenues affect their animals’ quality of life
        • Zoos encourage rare animals to be taken from the wild and transported to zoos
        • Animals deserve to live in their natural habitat
      • For their part, conservationists and researchers claim that zoos may be the only way to protect some animals and are important for research

      • Do’s
      • Don’t’s
