      • We will now look at a lecture by Aimee Mullins , a woman who lost her legs but gained something in return

      • Disability imposes two major costs
        • Environmental limitations – the human world hasn’t been designed for the disabled
          • Many buildings are not friendly for the handicapped
          • Everyday activities can be difficult
        • Social stigma – disabled people are treated differently
          • Handicapped people may be treated like children by the able-bodied
          • In the past, mentally disabled people were often outcasts
    7. Overcoming Disability Through Technology
      • How can technology help the disabled?
      • This is inventor Dean Kamen’s iBOT
        • It could climb stairs, go outdoors, and lift people
        • It was discontinued because of price ($22K)
      • Kamen didn’t quit inventing, though – let’s watch him talk and see a demo
    8. Overcoming Disability Through Social Change
      • The status of disabled people often improves with the economy
      • Many countries have made new laws because of disabled rights movements
      • Attitudes can also be changed by people like Helen Keller – who was she?
    9. Discussion
      • Do disabled people have a different culture from the able-bodied?
      • Have you ever learned international sign language? What was it like?
      • Does China’s government spend enough money to help the disabled?
      • How could public transportation be improved to help disabled people?
