Creatures of the Sea - Presentation Transcript

  1.
  2. Starter Questions
    • Have you ever been swimming or diving in the ocean?
    • What are the largest creatures in the ocean?
    • What are the smallest creatures in the ocean?
    • What do you think are the strangest creatures in the ocean?
  3. Introduction
    • In today’s lecture we will look at different creatures from the sea, their characteristics, and habits
    • Most of the vocabulary in this lecture is basic English biological science vocabulary, so you’ll get some new words for things you already know about in Chinese
    • Let’s begin!
  4. Echinoderms
    • Echinoderm is the scientific name for creatures in the ocean with spiny skin
    • Echinoderms can be found all through the ocean and most of them have healing abilities
    • Examples include the starfish and sea cucumber
  5. Sea Cucumber
    • The sea cucumber is famous for a couple things
      • First, it’s pretty ugly – like a cucumber
      • Second, it defends itself in a very unique way
    • Have you ever eaten a sea cucumber? Did you like the taste?
  6. Jellyfish
    • Jellyfish are simple sea creatures that feed using tentacles
    • They come in different sizes and shapes and are found throughout the world
    • Some are highly poisonous, such as the box jelly and Portuguese Man O’ War
  7. Crustaceans
    • Crustaceans are a group of creatures whose bodies are covered with a protective shell
    • Their limbs always include claws and they usually have antennae
    • Some can go on land for a short time
    • Examples include crabs, lobsters, and shrimp
  8. Pistol Shrimp
    • A pistol shrimp is a kind of shrimp which has a unique way of feeding
    • One of its claws is extremely powerful and can make a small explosion in the water that stuns fish and other creatures
    • Let’s see it in action
  9. Fish
    • What are the basic characteristics of fish?
      • Cold blooded
      • Gills for breathing
      • Lay eggs
      • Special skin
    • Fish are some of the oldest creatures in the ocean
    • They come in many sizes and shapes
  10. Great White Shark
    • Sharks are cartilaginous fish – they don’t have bones like other fish
    • Most are predators , and the most famous of these is the great white shark
    • It lives in tropical waters around the world and will eat almost anything
  11. Manta Ray
    • Rays are a kind of fish related to shark
    • The rays have a flattened body that seems to “fly” under the ocean
    • The manta ray is the largest of these kind of fish, and is found in the tropics
  12. Clown Fish
    • A clown fish is a small tropical fish that is brightly colored
    • It is a good example of symbiosis in nature
      • It lives in a special home, a sea anemone
      • The sea anemone is highly poisonous but the clown fish is immune to the poison
  13. Flounder
    • A flounder is a fish with special camouflage to help it hide on the ocean floor
    • When it is young, its body is like other fish, but when it gets older, it becomes flat
    • Flounder meat is considered delicious
  14. Mollusks
    • Mollusks are another ancient creature found in the ocean and sometimes on land
    • They have soft skin and a protective shell, but their features are very different from species to species
    • Examples include snails, octopi, and clams
  15. Sea Slug
    • The sea slug is related to the land slug and the snail
      • These are gastropods (stomach-footed)
    • It is a mollusk with no visible shell and a long, soft body
    • It is often poisonous and will eat fish, crabs, and other mollusks
  16. Giant Clams
    • Giant clams are a kind of mollusk called a bivalve – it means its shell has two parts
    • They’re about a meter wide
    • They live on the ocean floor and filter food from the water
    • They have many, many e eyes inside of their shell
  17. Cephalopods
    • Their name means “head-footed”
    • Cephalopods are among the smartest creatures in the ocean
    • They have a highly developed eye, tentacled legs, and are usually predators
    • Their shells have all but disappeared
  18. Creatures of the Deep Ocean
    • Creatures of the deep ocean have many special characteristics
    • They are resistant to pressure and cold and able to live in dark places
    • Many of them are bioluminescent – they make their own light!
  19. Angler Fish
    • The angler fish is a predatory fish that uses part of its body to attract smaller fish before attacking
    • They live in the deepest parts of the ocean
    • Many of them are bioluminescent
  20. Tube Worms
    • A tube worm is a creature living on the ocean floor near underwater volcanoes
    • Their body is a long tube with a feathery mouth at the end
    • They filter food and minerals and can tolerate poisons from the volcanoes
    • Afterwards, we’ll discuss what you think about these animals
  21. Sea Turtles
    • Sea turtles are the most common reptiles in the oceans
    • They must hold their breath to dive
    • They swim through the oceans of the world each year
    • They are some of the longest-living animals in the sea
  22. Sea Mammals
    • Now, we’re going to talk about sea mammals
    • What is a mammal?
      • It breathes air
      • It is warm-blooded
      • It gives birth to living babies (doesn’t lay eggs)
      • It gives milk
    • The two main kinds of sea mammals are pinnipeds and cetaceans
  23. Pinnipeds
    • Their name means “flipper-footed” and they’re a kind of mammal that lives on land and in the water
    • Their bodies are usually fat to protect them from the cold
    • Examples include seals, sea lions, and walruses
  24. Walruses
    • Walruses are some of the largest mammals in the world
      • They weigh up to 2,000 kilograms
    • They live in arctic regions
    • They’re famous for their tusks , which are made of ivory – just like an elephant
  25. Cetaceans
    • Cetaceans are mammals that have evolved fish-like bodies for swimming
    • Their nose has become a blowhole at the top of their head
    • They also have the ability to communicate and “see” the ocean using sound
  26. Dolphins and Porpoises
    • Dolphins are among the most intelligent ocean creatures
    • They are predators and usually around the size of a person
    • Killer whales are related to dolphins
    • They instinctively like people
  27. Blue Whale
    • The blue whale is the largest creature in the world
    • It has no teeth and instead feeds on krill , tiny shrimp like creatures, by filtering them from the water
    • Let’s watch a video to learn more
    • Any questions?
