Utopia: Helpful or Hindering? - Presentation Transcript
Utopia: Helpful or Hindering? By: Travis Stine
What is a Utopia? “Any imaginary place where all things are perfect” (Merriam-Webster) Perfect – all desires and needs met, no mistakes, no wrong.
Argument In the long run, a utopia would be more hindering than helpful to society. Lack of diversity and change Takes away the motivation and the purpose to live away from people. There are no hardships in life.
How is suffering good? The lack of hardships prevents people from learning important life skills. Overcoming obstacles gives meaning to life.
Examples Studying Physical Training
Lack of Change and Diversity Redundancy of every day life Living becomes more like a chore and too much of a routine
Example Adam and Eve eating forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. Food Analogy
No Motivation and Purpose There is no point in setting goals when one has everything desired. No goals = nothing to strive for or to accomplish Life is too easy.
Examples Gilman’s Herland, “life is a struggle, and if there is no struggle, there is no life” Buddha
Conclusion A utopia isn’t as good as it seems Utopia brings temporary relief and happiness Utopia takes away important qualities of life away
