    Matter Vocabulary - Presentation Transcript

    1. Matter Vocabulary By M ónica Alonso
    2. matter
      • Anything that has mass and takes up space and has properties that you can observed and describe.
    3. buoyancy
      • The upward force of water or air on an object.
      http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/lasalle/buoybasics.html
    4. mass
      • The amount of matter in an object.
    5. solid
      • The state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume.
    6. liquid
      • The state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape.
    7. gas
      • The state of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume.
    8. Measuring Matter
    9. metric system
      • A system of measurement based on units of 10.
      http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hillger/everyday.htm
    10. length
      • The number of units that fit along one edge of something.
    11. area
      • The number of unit square that fit inside of surface.
Example:   area = 9 square units
    12. volume
      • the amount of space that something takes up.
    13. weight
      • The measure of the pull of gravity between an object and Earth.
    14. density
      • The amount of matter in a given space.
    15. What Matter Is Made Of.
    16. element
      • A substance made up of only one kind of atom.
    17. mixture
      • A blending of two or more types of matter that are not chemically combined.
    18. filter
      • A tool used to separate things by size.
    19. evaporation
      • Is the change of liquid to gas.
    20. More About Matter
    21. conductor
      • Materials that transfers heat well.
    22. convection
      • The movement of heat in liquids and gases from warmer areas to cooler areas.

    23. chemical property
      • A property that involves how a substance interacts with other substances.
    24. chemical change
      • a change in matter that makes new matter.
      • When metal rusts,
      • it is a chemical change.
      http://www.harcourtschool.com/glossary/science07/index4.htm l
    25. atom
      • The smallest unit of an element that has all the properties of that element.
    26. conduction
      • The movement of heat between two materials that are touching.
    27. heat
      • The flow of thermal energy from one object to another.
    28. compound
      • A substance made of two or more different elements.
    29. insulator
      • A material that does not transfer heat very well.
    30. radiation
      • The transfer of heat through space.
    31. physical change
      • A change that begins and ends with the same type of matter.
    32. Physical property
      • A property that involves a substance by itself.
