Rhizome Project: exploring digital identities Rhizome Project: exploring digital identities Presentation Transcript

  • rhizome: exploring digital identities in learning, teaching and research Dr Steven Warburton, King’s College London http://liquidlearning.org http://www.rhizomeproject.org
  • “ As I try (and leave) more and more environments I am depositing small identity artifacts that I can no longer track and I am feeling like I am fracturing my identity [my correction] more and more along the way.” http://camplesegroup.com/blog/?p=1203 Cole Camplese
  • project aims
    • to explore and determine the key social and technical elements that impact on the construction of online identities
    • build a coherent framework through which individuals can be provided with a set of tools and practices that will allow them to create and control effective online identities
    • address issues of empowerment and agency such that every citizen is able to participate in genuine and sustained lifelong learning processes .
    • individuals (life long learners)
    • instructional designers, learning technologist, teachers
    • IT managers, technical staff
    • marketing and institutional communication officers
    • institutional authorities
    • education providers
    • elearning, eRecruitment and HR services
    • identity providers
    • standardisation bodies
    stakeholders
    • create an effective online identity for LLL purposes
    • design and implement learning episodes that interface the digital spaces of the community with the digital spaces of the self
    • organise learning experiences about identity related literacies
    • help individuals in the deployment and management of identity related services
    • design and implement policies for the management of institutional identities
    • understand the needs of individuals when designing and deploying eLearning, eRecruitment and HR electronic transactions and services
    • understand individual and institutional needs and uses for identity management in the field of LLL
benefits the project will provide a set of tools, guidelines and conceptual understandings that will help stakeholders to:
  • the complexity of identity
    • self as internal
    • self as viewed by others
    • the self in relation to knowledge and discourse
    • the self as a body
    • what does this self look like - a concept, a story, an image, an associative network?
  • rhizome  identity
    • decentralised
    • unpredictable
    • connected
    • branching in many directions
    • multiple entry points
    • no single true view - only partial perspectives
    • a multiplicity of dimensions - we lose the illusion of the objective all seeing eye/I
    • the metaphor of cartography, the map - no privileged entry point and always open to change
Sermijn, Devlieger and Loots (2008). The Narrative Construction of the Self: Selfhood as a Rhizomatic Story. Qualitative Inquiry, (14)4:632--650.
  • digital identities
    • digital identities are performed across a variety of electronic spaces
    • we are in effect, curators of the self
    • leveraging a number of differing services
    • comprised of structured (transactional) and unstructured data
    • resulting in the creation of distributed, proliferating digital selves
  •
  • our approach
  • multiple perspectives, multiple dimensions ID, fixed digital self, mutable research, review agency, action problems solutions past future scope action problem spaces time
  • scope ID, fixed digital self, mutable Digital identity landscape: what are online identities and how are they implemented? Identity literacies and competencies: How do we create online identities and the rhetoric of the self? Functional identities in use: Online identities, what for? What is the spectrum of identity related transactions (LLL)? Interactions between live identities: How identities interact? Social, ethical and security dimensions themes 1 to 4 (below)
  • online identity problem space identity uncontrolled, ineluctable identity management for LLL* researching problem spaces tools for action awareness, active dissemination, proof of concept tool understanding the self *Life Long Learning
  • research to action research, review agency, action diachronic analysis past evolution contemporary trends future desk field prospective key reports, synthesis stories, patterns of use scenarios, road mapping awareness, dissemination proof of concept tool
  • a proof of concept identity may not be a CV and a CV is not online identity BUT it is a key component in identity transactions related to education and work addresses control, management and user-centric* presentation of the self background of increasing use of blogs, plug-ins, widgets *this is an approach also adopted by the ‘H-Resume’ project
  • project evaluation key evaluation questions project logic model evaluation plan analysis grid evaluation stakeholder analysis advisory group criteria for success periodic evaluation reports
  • linking it all together: the project workflow
  • dissemination - a three tier approach a multi-faceted activity addressing awareness, knowledge and use using both active and passive modes
  • Planning, desk research, identification of key issues across digital identities. rhizome activity dissemination objective dissemination mode dissemination mechanism Active Mailing list, flyers, webpages, (micro) blogging, workshops, aggregation tools. Narrative and scenario mapping workshops, collation and analysis of data. Invitations to experts, awareness campaign using multiple channels. Active Research to action, proof of concept and model, reporting. Project report, multiple dissemination channels. Awareness campaign and user-studies of WP plug-in. Passive/ active Awareness Knowledge Use
