Metamorphosis
Gulita, 5th July 2006

    Steve Remedios
Etymology
     Latin, from Greek metamorphOsis,
                                     meta-
from metamorphoun to transform, from meta-
              + morphE form
15 Months
      To transform you…
From a Student
         To
              A
                  Leader
For the next hour, I work for…
Why will ‘learning’ be so difficult
     during this program
The paradox of our pedagogical system
My views
Nothing you have ever done has prepared you for this
The ‘learning structure’ is fundamentally different
Ask and you will be given
      Seek and you shall find
The ‘T’ - ‘T’ trade off
      Tutor
      Teacher
Failure of our Education System #1
           Team VS Self
Why am I called a
                     Trainee’?
‘Business Leadership Trainee’?
     The changing paradigm ~
     from Managers to Leaders
~ Peter F. Drucker ~
 Management is doing things right;
Leadership is doing the right things.
~ Benjamin Disraeli~
I must follow the people. Am I not
           their leader?
~ Robert Half ~
Delegating work works, provided the
     one delegating works, too.
~ Groucho Marx~
Only one man in a thousand is a
         leader of men
-- the other 999 follow women.
“Leadership”
     “is the art of accomplishing
more than the science of management
           says is possible.”
Leadership
“A leader is a dealer in hope”
“To do something, however small, to make others happier and
better is the highest ambition, the most elevating hope,
which can inspire a human being.”
“Innovation thrives on encouragement.”
“A reputation for a thousand years may depend upon the
                                  conduct of a single moment.”
MY LEADERSHIP
   EQUATION
    Leadership
       =
     V*I*M
MY LEADERSHIP
   EQUATION
         Leadership
             =
Vision*Inspiration*Momentum
Bottom Line
Love is the Killer Ap!
What is the right attitude?
‘I will get to do this just once, I will do the
best I can to learn as much as I can’
The Internal Compass
"In looking for people to hire, you look for three
qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if
they don't have the first, the other two will kill you.“
             — Warren Buffet
           CEO, Berkshire Hathaway
The Compass
In the year ahead
   You will see more money
   More responsibility
   More autonomy
Than you have ever seen in your life
My simple advice:
“Do not do anything that you will find uncomfortable to
discuss with your parents / friends / girl / boy friend”
A Simple Question
"What is left when honor is lost?"
                       — Publilius Syrus
            First Century BC, Maxim 265
Will this be the hardest year of my
                life?
                Yes
                 &
             No No No

The Watchful Eye
There is limited interaction with your tutor

BTM / CO / Accounts Clerks
There are no short cuts
If you are cheating yourself, your tutor is likely to catch you

THE LEADERSHIP QUIZ
10 Leaders With a Lesson for Each One
                Of Us.
CHARISMA
A woman once dined with two rival statesmen on consecutive
nights. When asked her impression of them she said,
“When I left the room after sitting next to William, I
thought he was the cleverest man in England. But after
sitting next to Benjamin, I thought I was the cleverest
                     woman in England”
COMMITMENT
When asked why he was working so diligently on a dark
corner of the Sistine Chapel that no one would ever see,
His simple reply was, “God will see”
COMMUNICATION
While announcing his run for the presidency in 1980, he cast
the vision for his campaign clearly and simply saying, “At
the heart of our message should be five simple familiar
words. No big economic theories. No sermons on political
philosophy. Just five short words: family, work,
               neighborhood, freedom, peace.”
COMPETENCE
What do these three men have in common?
The auto racer who set the world speed record at
                     Daytona in 1914
The pilot who recorded the highest number of victories in
aerial combat against the Germans in WW I
The secretary of war’s private adviser who survived a
plane crash and 22 days on a raft in the Pacific during
                         WW II
SELF DISCIPLINE
Long after he had gained fame and fortune as the greatest
batsman in the world he continued to build and perfect his
skill. Through the war years he lived a Spartan lifestyle
going back to the pitches at every possible opportunity. It is
no surprise that he was one of Australia’s most successful
captain and ended his career with a staggering average of
                             99.96
DRIVE
Kemmons Wilson had five children. Whenever he
vacationed, he took a real beating. Motels charged $4 to $
6 a night for a room plus $2 per child. It tripled his bill.
That made his Scottish blood boil. He decided to do
something about it. “Lets go home and start a chain of
family hotel,” he said to his wife, “hotels with a name you
                         can trust.”
PASSION
His passion for the equality and recognition of colored people
in the United States was unparalleled. He fought for it
with every sinew in his body till he paid for this passion
with his own life. His “I have a dream” speech is till today
considered as one of the most influential public speeches
                           ever made.
VISION
This former CEO of Pepsi and Apple Computers had this
to say about vision: “The future belongs to those who see
           possibilities before they become obvious”
