Stephan hittmann on medical treatment in schools (

  1. 1. Stephan Hittmann on MedicalTreatment in Schools (Part 2 of2)Stephan Hittmann, an internationally recognizedpublic health expert, continues to discuss medicaltreatment in schools.
  2. 2. Question: How can schools provideadequate medical care for their students?Stephan Hittmann: Some schools havecontracted with local hospitals and other healthcare providers to start school-based medicalclinics. These clinics provide full-servicemedical care to students on school grounds.Staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, andnurses, the clinics give students convenient, affordable access to care. For instance, eachyear many students are sent to the emergencyroom for asthma attacks because schools lackadequate medications, nurses, or facilities. Theclinics allow children to receive care on site, reducing hospital visits and making it possiblefor students to return to class.
  3. 3. Question: How do you expectschool medical care to change inthe future?Stephan Hittmann: I think school-based medicalclinics will become more common. The federalgovernment has realized that they save moneyand has earmarked funding to encouragedistricts to adopt the model. I also think thatmore teachers will receive basic medicaltraining. When so many students come to classwith chronic illnesses, teachers need to havethe basic knowledge and skills to cope withcommon medical problems. Finally, it seemslikely that schools will soon play a central role inpublic health initiatives. With so many parentsunable to take their children to the doctor, schools will serve as a hub for vaccinations, obesity prevention, and even basic primarycare.
