  8. 8. São Bento Railway Station SPACE PARTICULARITIES – NOBLE AND EMBLEMATIC José Marques da Silva was the architect of São Bento Station. The most notable aspect of this historical station is the large, magnificent tile panels in the vestibule, work of Jorge Colaço, the most important portuguese tile painter of the time. August 2011 – distinguished as one of the most beautiful train stations in the world by ‘Travel & Leisure’ magazine. April 2012 – distinguished as one of the top-ten beautiful train stations in the world by ‘Flavorwire’ magazine. 8

São Bento Railway Station PLACE OF MOBILITY São Bento is connected, by suburban trains, with the eastern area of the city of Oporto, the Campanhã Railway Station (the long-distance and international travel services destination). Near São Bento exists an underground station, also named São Bento. 9

São Bento Railway Station MANAGEMENT • Station security – increased in 2012 24/7 two security guards permanently (responsible for ensuring public order and safety with police force - railway police) • Ensure the quality of the transport services. Daily average (approximately): •35 000 passengers (95% of which for the suburban commuter service) 10

Violence in Transit Impacts PARTNERSHIP REFER | EAPN Within the scope of is corporate social responsibility policy, REFER joined the Project Violence in Transit, allowing and contributing to: •A reflection on the subject; •To draw management and action strategies for the revitalization and improvement of railway social spaces; •Improving our service; •Acquire detailed knowledge about problematic social behaviors in São Bento Station (study made by an independent institution). Add value to the community it serves. 12

Violence in Transit Impacts REFER SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Action lines •REFER develops its activity in order to privilege the interests and welfare of the communities it serves; •REFER recognizes its responsibility in supporting the development of initiatives that promote the community, its cohesion and protection; •Ensure the compatibility of different interests: Social support to homeless; Satisfaction and passenger safety; Guarantee a quality service by the infrastructure manager. 13
