Published on

Presentation offered to WLU JN360, 03-Oct-2013 (Instructor: E. Russell)

This deck introduces Statistics Canada's public resources for journalism students. Major highlights include:

- Geography (Standard Geographical Classification)
- statcan.gc.ca
- CANSIM
- Summary Tables
- The Daily
- StatCan Reports and Analyses

Spent time explaining how statistics are used (and often maligned) in the media and in politics. Pays special attention to the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia Claims about wait times, an issue in the 2013 Nova Scotia provincial election

  34. 34. STATCAN’S PUBLIC RESOURCES YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK
  35. 35. Statistical sources can be hard to find. Or: Statistical info can be hard to source. 1. There is a lot of information out there • The sheer amount of links, resources, and ephemera makes discovering useful resources difficult 2. A culture of not citing (and not properly citing) • Many not-for-profits, NGOs, and media agencies, gov’t departments, and even researchers do not (fully) cite their statistics. • Are you citing the report and analysis? Or are you citing the table? • FYI: The Laurier Library has a Statistics Citing Guide here 3. The data and the statistics do not exist • Not everything under the sun has been collected or analyzed 4. Collectors have a profit motive (or have bills to pay) • The license for the data may be cost-prohibitive michael steeleworthy, mlis / msteeleworthy@wlu.ca 37
  36. 36. www.statcan.gc.ca is your first stop • Agency of Federal Government • Health, Trade, Education, Immigration, Violence, Crime, Spending, Income, Demographics, etc. • Statistics and data • Reports (“This is what we learned..”) • Analysis (“This is why it’s so.”) • Many StatCan products are quoted regularly in the media. michael steeleworthy, mlis / msteeleworthy@wlu.ca 38
  37. 37. StatCan: Browse by Subject • Find the subject matter you need • Tables, Reports, Analysis, Daily Media Releases michael steeleworthy, mlis / msteeleworthy@wlu.ca 39
  38. 38. StatCan: Browse by Key Resource • When you know what you need • CANSIM, Summary Tables, Reference, Maps, Surveys michael steeleworthy, mlis / msteeleworthy@wlu.ca 40
  39. 39. StatCan: The Daily • www.statcan.gc.ca • StatCan’s daily releases • Searchable • Links to tables and reports • Good for finding most recent information on a given subject • Good for finding reference to statistical tables in CANSIM (more on that later…) michael steeleworthy, mlis / msteeleworthy@wlu.ca 41
  40. 40. StatCan: CANSIM {key resource} • www.statcan.gc.ca • StatCan’s key socioeconomic database • Thousands of tables on: • Health and welfare • Education • Income • Labour and Work • Justice • Trade and Finance • Culture and Heritage • Social and Spending michael steeleworthy, mlis / msteeleworthy@wlu.ca 42
  41. 41. StatCan: CANSIM {key resource} • www.statcan.gc.ca • CANSIM can sometimes be difficult to work with • Language (unemployment v. CPI) • Many similar tables appear in results (which one to choose?) • Many terminated tables • Keep calm and carry on • Give yourself time to learn the system • Read the related information • Remember to “Add data” • Find tables in The Daily and then search for it in CANSIM • Browse instead of search. michael steeleworthy, mlis / msteeleworthy@wlu.ca 43
  42. 42. StatCan: Census Portal and NHS • www.statcan.gc.ca • Census Portal • Census information for 2011 and 2006, some of 2001, and some historic data prior to that • (Contact me for help if you need older stats.) • National Household Survey (NHS) • New Survey in 2011 • Replaced “Long Form Census” • Data quality issues prevail in the news, but considering a subject with most provinces will be OK • Some issues with the north • “Global Non-Response” Value (GNR) will help you understand data quality michael steeleworthy, mlis / msteeleworthy@wlu.ca 44
  43. 43. StatCan: Census Portal and NHS • www.statcan.gc.ca • Census Portal • Language / Population Counts / Marriage Status / Age and Sex • National Household Survey (NHS) • Aboriginal Profiles • Immigration and ethnocultural diversity • Education • Labour • Mobility and Migration (in Canada) • Income and Housing michael steeleworthy, mlis / msteeleworthy@wlu.ca 45
  44. 44. Feeling adventurous? Try <odesi> • <odesi> • You can access the public microdata file • This means you can build your own tables: • How many smokers suffer from COPD • You don’t need to know how to programme in SPSS • You do need to understand “weighting” • Be careful how you interpret numbers michael steeleworthy, mlis / msteeleworthy@wlu.ca 46
  45. 45. Other Canadian Resources • StatCan Health Portal • Reports, stats, and analysis for public health • Very easy to locate key indicators • Cdn Institute of Health Information • Studies the health of the health system (e.g., wait times; beds per patient per region) • Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) • Good source for surveillance and action • Canadian Index of Wellbeing • Studies wellbeing as a measure of the nation’s health and social progress: e.g., education, living standards, time use, environment • Canadian Public Policy Collection • Policy Portal; not necessarily stats • Government documents, white papers, reports from NGOs, think tanks, etc michael steeleworthy, mlis / msteeleworthy@wlu.ca 47
