    5. 5. Bench Marking Triathlon Star Market Positioning vs TriStar’s positioning in the market contrasts sharply with that of the leading triathlon brand, IRONMAN. Only highly conditioned athletes can participate in the IRONMAN experience since it is geared to the high performance athlete and is rigorous. The IRONMAN race format consists of a 3.8 km swim, 180 km cycling, and 42 km run. TriStar was launched in 2009 by Star Production a successful triathlon event company as distinctly non-IRONMAN in its positioning. We created Star to address the growing need for greater participation in triathlon athletics. Despite its rapid growth, traditional triathlon has been unable to widen its appeal significantly due to the rigidity of its format. Competitors> There is no other company worldwide with this race format focus. The Triathlon industry in the US and Europe is very fragmented with over 90% of the market consisting of single event promoters. IRONMAN is the largest triathlon event company in the world and has 74 races with participation of approximately 140,000 athletes annually. IRONMAN is not a direct competitor to Star. IRONMAN is seeking ways to expand its appeal with different race formats. However, its new formats still pose a formidable challenge for all but the most well conditioned athletes. IRONMAN cannot dramatically shorten it race formats as distance and endurance is intrinsic to its brand.> The ITU is organizing Olympic distance World Cup Events in several countries and destinations. Their international approach was started a few years ago, and since 2010 they have been trying to expand and professionalize more rapidly their events. Since their focus is on the Olympic distance and working more on a Federation platform to be the official Qualifier for the Olympic Games, their market is limited and they are not a direct competitor.
