  3. 3. The Ottoman army had been the biggest in Europe, there navy was incharge of the shipping lanes of the eastern Mediterranean, also its capitalIstanbul was five times bigger the size of Paris. Its resources seemedlimitless, and its capacity to get rid of opposition in the name of Islamhelped the Turkish Empire to have an awesome presence.
  4. 4. What Mustafa Kemal learned from histime with the Young Turks was harsh.One was that good thoughts alone donot assure political success.
  5. 5. Another was that the best men—atleast those Kemal considered bestdidn’t always become the leaders.
  6. 6. Kemal thought that men like Enver,who was being widely acclaimed asthe leaders of the new Turkey,were not worthy of theirpopularity.
