  • 1. Chapter 37.2 – The Circulatory System The Heart and Blood
  • 2. Function
    • Provides the force to distribute ____ blood ____ to and from the cells
  • 3. Organs of the Circulatory System
    • Heart – main organ of the circulatory system
      • Functions in pumping the blood to and from the lungs for gas exchange
      • Covered by pericardium – thin TOUGH__ membrane
      • Muscular organ that contracts to force blood through the vessels
      • ____ atria – receive blood from body or lungs (top of heart)
    • --____ ventricles – send blood to body or lungs (bottom of heart
  • 4. Blood – carries food and oxygen to the cells and removes the wastes from cells
      • Solid part of blood:
        • Red blood cells (__RBC__) – carry oxygen from the lungs and carry carbon dioxide to the lungs
        • White blood cells (__WBC__) – destroy bacteria and help repair tissue
      • Liquid part of blood:
        • Plasma – made up of proteins and dissolved salts in water
  • 5. Blood Vessels – channels that blood passes through
      • ___ARTERIES_ – carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
      • ____VEINS___ – carry deoxygenated blood to the heart
  • 6. CAPILLARIES – connect the arteries and vein
  • 7. Aorta Pulmonary veins Right Atrium Right Ventricle Pulmonary veins Left Atrium Left Ventricle
  • 8. Chapter 37.1 – The Respiratory System How We Breathe!
  • 9. Respiration
    • Provides our cells with __OXYGEN____and rids our cells of carbon dioxide.
    • Pathway of Air
    • Nose or mouth  pharynx or throat  larynx  trachea  bronchi  bronchioles  lungs with alveoli
  • 10.
    • Alveoli – the place of gas exchange thousands of thin-walled sacs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged by __diffusion____ with the _circulatory_system
  • 11. Nose Larynx Mouth Lung Right Bronchi Diaphragm Pharynx Trachea Left Bronchi Bronchioles Alveoli
