THE PROTEST SONG
A protest song is a song which is associated with a movement for social change
and hence part of the broader category of topical songs (or songs connected to
current events). People have used these songs to protest against many things,
such as social injustice, civil rights, inequality, war, famine or many other social
issues.
There have been many famous artists that have been known for their political or
social content of their songs such as Neil Young, Rage Against the Machine,
Joan Baez, Leadbelly, The Clash, Pearl Jam. But the greatest example or mostly
known artist that falls into this category is Bob Dylan. He was part of the 60s
folk movement and was known for his social and politically charged lyrics.
Below is an example of one of his songs:
Times they are a Changin
Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And It is ragin'
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.
This became an anthem for frustrated youth. It summed up the anti-establishment feelings of people who would later be
known as hippies during the 1960s.
As a young teenager living in Guayaquil, what would you rebel against? If you were to write a song, what two issues would be
a priority to write about? Write them down on the space below.
