  • Ladies and Gentlemen gather around I would to share with you a story.
  • Once upon a time in 19th century Germany there was ………Click The bookNow during this time the book was the king of story-telling. It was venerable but it was a little bit boring.
  • Because in the 400 yrs of existence storytellers never changed the book into a storytelling device but then one author arrived and he transformed the game forever.
  • His name, LotharMeggendorfer.
  • Lother put his foot down and he said genug is genug (german for enough is enough) He grab his pen and his snatched his scissors this man refused to allow things to stay the same.
  • History would know LotherMeggandorfer as history’s first true inventor of the children’s pop-up book.
  • Story-telling has now transformed into a visual and interactive device. Going from simple black and white words to colorful pictures that had the ability to move.
  • this delight and for this wonder people rejoiced. They were happy because the story survived and the world would keep on spinning.
  • As time passed the way stories were told continued to transformed. There was Radio news and then radio theater.
  • Then from still movies
  • To film in motion
  • Then movies in black and white to movies in color and sound. And then VHS to DVD and then 3D.
  • . And things got a lot more fun when the internet came around. Because not only could people broadcast their stories throughout the world they could do so using with what seemed to be an infinite amount of devices.
  • People have taken a step back and realized that in 6,000 yrs of storytelling, they have gone from depicting hunting on cave walls
  • to depicting Shakespeare on facebook wall. And this was a cause for celebration. The art of storytelling has remained unchanged.
  • We all have a basic need to share stories. It is hard not to share with others because our human nature urges us to communicate.  Each one of us are story-tellers. Today stories continue to be told now using media. Media are means or ways of communicating. Examples of different media are books, movies, music, internet, games…all these communicate a message through story. Just as you learn to read a book, it is important to learn how different media tell stories through images, and sound.  Let’s see how you read the following? (logos)
  • Can you spot something in this logo? The FedEx logo, designed in 1994 by Linden Leader & Landor Associates, at first appears simple and straightforward. However, if you look at the white space between the "E" and "x" you can see a right-facing arrow. This "hidden" arrow was intended to be a subliminal symbol for speed and precision.
  • Amazon.comThat yellow arrow is more than just a decorative swoosh. The Amazon logo was created to represent the message that it sells everything from A to Z (the arrow connects the two letters) and also represents the smile that customers would experience by shopping on the Amazon.com Web site (the arrow becomes a smile).
  • The apple in this logo is taken from the Bible story of Adam and Eve, where the apple represents the fruit of Tree of Knowledge, with a pun on “byte/bite”.
  • What does the Church have to say about the media?Click…..this picture may give you a hint
  • The Church’s support for the integration of communication technology began even before the internet It is important to know that the Church considers media to be gifts from God. Pope Francis says, that they can become encounters, places where the good is upheld and supported. Pope Francis says that “media can be encounters to build up the dignity of the person. How do we interact with media we experience?
  • It is important to ask questions when using the media in order to understand what story and message is being told and since you are all creators of media to question what you choose to share, post, play, listen.
  • Do you think social media is in the bible? What is social media……communicating stories and messages. The summary of storytelling looks like this. Written letters,
  • Do you think social media is in the bible? What is social media……communicating stories and messages. The summary of storytelling looks like this. Written letters,
  • Let’s watch a video and you tell me What techniques are being used and what story is being told? Exodus video. The Exodus story is at the center of the OT faith experience, which the fullness of the Gospel message about life is about. The Lord revealed himself to Israel as it’s Savior, with the power to ensure a future to those without hope. Israel’s life is the object of God’s gentle and intense love.  Freedom from slavery meant the gift of an identity, the recognition of a very precious dignity and the beginning of a new history in which the discovery of God and discovery of self go hand in hand.
  • Who likes to find good videos on youtube? Every video whether a commercial (like this) or home video have values. What values did you see here? Safety, humor-we all enjoy laughing, sharing, community-bear telling others the great thing he discovered.
  • Video of news talking about junior high football team Values: sacrifice, putting others first, dignity Keith has a special nature. They wanted to do something to make Keith feel apart of the team. “which just make that touchdown the most successful football play of all time.” What we choose to watch, share, post is based on what is important to us. And what we choose to
  • Some examples of cyberbullying are:Sending mean text messages.Spreading rumors online.Creating fake profiles to make fun of someone.Recording and posting fight videos.Photoshopping pictures to make someone look bad.Trash talking someone in an online game.Sometimes people cyberbully others because:They think it’s funny. They don’t like someone and want to hurt their feelings. They think someone is different and call them mean words, like “gay.” (Share this only if you judge the tweens to be mature enough to discuss it or if they have already mentioned it themselves.)The good news is that most kids aren’t involved in cyberbullying, but it’s still a serious problem that everyone here needs to think about.
  • What story is being told? When we post it is important to ask the THINK questions before, during and after we choose to watch, play create or post
  • Let’s watch this video and talk about what story is being told and watch techniques are being used to tell the story
  • Have a conversation with the audience about what story is being told and what techniques are being used. Some of the lyrics “You can be amazingYou can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drugYou can be the outcastOr be the backlash of somebody’s lack of loveOr you can start speaking up”We are all creators and what we choose to post, share, create and say can either tear someone down or it can build up the Kingdom of God. So before, during and after you play, listen, post, share or create THINK!!! The closing prayer is on the back of card “Christ has no online presence but yours” (used with permission)
