Scott Rains On Geotourism & DisabilityRob,
Absolutely.
My approach is that one is limited by design interacting with one’s personal set of functional abilities. Change the design and you increase what one can do (or not do) with the abilities they have. I like what Access to Recreation is doing:

Design is the Problem WebinarI am going to circulate this to my colleagues working in the interface between human and ecological sustainability through the tourism industry with the concept of Inclusive Tourism (and Inclusive Destination Development.)
From our perspective you could strengthen the presentation by making explicit the application of Universal Design (Desenho Universal in Curitiba, Brasil; LEED points for Universal Design as waste reduction) and the Inclusive Tourism elaboration on Geotourism ( http://geotourism.changemakers.com/en-us/node/21221 )7 months ago

2002 Open Doors Organization Disability StudyThis study, follows on and adds quantified validation to, Simon Darcy’s groundbreaking research in ’From Anxiety to Access.’ It is summarized and updated in an analysis by Laurel van Horn in her TRANSED 2007 paper ’Disability Travel in the United States.’ The concept Inclusive Tourism evolved from these and other seminal works such as Peter Neumann’s ’The Economic Impulses of Accessible Tourism for All’ and the design approach arising from the Disability Rights movement known as Universal Design.

Van Horn Transed2007 PaperShu,
You are welcome.
Laurel’s work is consistently high quality. She has been at it for years and is an important and stable force in progress in our niche.
This paper is from the TRANSED conference. You ought to consider submitting a presentation proposal for TRANSED 2010 in Hong Kong. Your work on travel and quality of life for persons wit mobility impairments will fit well with the conerence’s inclusive Tourism theme.7 months ago

Universal Design In Thai Domestic SpacesAntika,
It’s good to see your work up here for more people to discover. I hope it encourages others to undertake studies of cultural responses to Universal Design.

Yours Is A Very Bad Airline (2003)I came across your American Airlines story here at SlideShare.net where, coincidentally, I am uploading materials for the second International Congress on Accessible Travel scheduled for Bangkok this fall.
You illustrate what we call a person who is "Temporarily Abled Bodied" (TAB) experiencing a status shift -- and the stigmatization imposed by that inivoluntary change of social class. With injury and disability as new experiences your slide expose is particularly valuable because of the sense of entitlement you retain. Having been researching, writing, and speaking on the topic of barrier-free travel for several years I appreciate the fresh perspective you bring.
I posted your slide show and a link to your blog entry today at the Rolling Rains Report (www.RollingRains.com)3 years ago
