• DevOps spring launch announcement summary (pdf):
https://w3-connections.ibm.com/blogs/3dacd986-e0cb-42d4-8575-5ace1234ca9d/entry/ibm_devops_spring_launch_content_june_2nd_2014?lang=en_us
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Three section to these notes:
Opening for presenter
Storyline / Key Takeaways
3. Why did we change the names of the adoption paths?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Opening for presenter
Rapidly changing business environments, technology trends, evolving customer expectations, multi-sourcing and complex supply chains are leading to higher expectations of IT to help drive improved business outcomes. However, most enterprises spend more than 40% of their IT investment on overhead work and less than 60% of their time on productive, value added activities. Business can enhance agility by improving their overall software delivery efficiency and by eliminating the unnecessary friction and wasted energy in the end-to-end software development and delivery lifecycle. However, speed must be balanced with cost and risk. IBM DevOps approach provides an enterprise capability for continuous software delivery that enables organizations to seize market opportunities and reduce time to customer feedback.
2. Storyline / Key Takeaways
Market shifts are making traditional software delivery solutions obsolete
Systems of Engagement (Cloud, Analytics, Mobile, Social) are driving the need to accelerate delivery, balance speed with quality/risk and reduce time to customer feedback
Systems of record need to be enabled for continuous delivery by eliminating waste and speed mismatch
Systems of interaction for modern, multi-channel applications must bring together SOE and SOR
Clients are looking for prescriptive guidance to adopt DevOps approach incrementally
IBM addresses these market shifts with new and innovative capabilities (these are the four themes of the spring update)
Systems of Engagement: New DevOps services for development and delivery in the cloud as PaaS
Systems of record: New capabilities to enable DevOps for traditional applications
Systems of interaction: New capabilities for multi-channel, multi-platform application delivery
DevOps Practices: New adoption model and framework for incremental adoption
Continued successful customer adoption and market validation
Outpacing the market’s growth (as per latest Gartner market share report)
Flexible consumption models of tokens and SaaS in addition to traditional licensing
IBM Design thinking to improve user experience and shift continuous delivery for our offerings
3. . Why did we change the names of the adoption paths?
Why we are changing the DevOps adoption path names.
Our previous DevOps messaging defines four adoption paths: Plan/Measure, Develop/Test, Release/ Deploy, Monitor/Optimize. A few drawbacks have been surfaced with these names:
1.Using two objectives for each path name (like Plan/Measure) implies more precision than intended and raises the question of which path includes scoping, architecting and design?
2.Like accelerating feedback, measuring and monitoring are important in every adoption path.
3.Plan-measure-develop-test-release-deploy-monitor-optimize smells a bit waterfallish.
The new adoption path names and descriptions:
Steer = Plan, decide, specify, architect, sense, and respond
Develop and Test =Design, code, build, release internal, test, and verify
Deploy =Build, deliver external,and validate
Operate = Monitor, tune, and validate
We tested these change with our broader community of clients, partners and IBMers including sellers and the executive leadership team. In our testing, there was fairly quick and strong consensus on Develop/Test, Deploy, and Operate. Steering is the one choice where there was some debate.
Why Steer? It encompasses the programmatic AND technical leadership. The word “steer” captures the control, instrumentation, and dynamic change aspects of today’s markets and continuous delivery goals. Steering is also used by SaFE and many leaders in the broader agile community. Steer has a very attractive connotation to dynamically changing expectations (scope), solutions (architecture), and execution (predictions, decisions, adjustments).
Why not plan and measure? Plans and planning are one of the four anti-patterns in the agile manifesto which states: We value Responding to change over following a plan. Responding to change means steering. Following a plan is the connotation of Plan/Measure. Also, measurement is an element of each adoption path, not a specific one. Finally, plan and measure has a programmatic connotation (i.e., plan and track, something managers do) and does not imply the technical leadership of scoping and architecting that should be 1st-class practices in this whole team adoption path.
Here is a set slides for the DevOps Adoption Model and the updated DevOps POV slide. Note that besides the adoption path name changes in the DevOps circle graphic (p5 and P6), "Best Practices" is now just "Practices", another change/improvement per our internal discussion and discussion with Forrester.
• Main point: DevOps is an enterprise capability for continuous software delivery that enables clients to seize market opportunities and reduce time to customer feedback (the following are the three themes of the launch which form “chapters” of his presentation)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is the IBM definition of DevOps. It enables clients to:
Accelerate software delivery - by enabling collaboration between customers and enterprises and eliminating organizational silos
Balance speed, cost, quality and risk- By automating manual processes and eliminating waste
Improve client experience - By speeding the customer feedback loop
Notes:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Companies that master effective software development and delivery in rapidly changing environments such as cloud, mobile and social will have a significant competitive advantage,” - Kristof Kloeckner, general manager, IBM Rational Software.
Also, free up precious mobile developers and easily integrate and extend on premise systems with new mobile apps.
Black Duck Open Hub service - planned
The planned integration with Black Duck Open Hub enables (Bluemix Devops Services) developers to quickly search and find what they want from a vast amount of OSS code snippets or projects, use Bluemix and IBM Devops Services (powered by JazzHub) to fork the project, build, test and deploy their solutions seamlessly in a matter of minutes.
• Search to Code in less than 2 min, Code to Deploy in less than seconds and Deploy to Feedback in minutes.
Main point: The pervasiveness of cloud technology, private, public, and hybrid, has enabled organizations to rapidly provision environments on demand further fueling the need for faster software delivery approaches such as DevOps
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the most critical changes that has affected DevOps (and actually helped it mature at the same time) is Cloud. IBM is continuing on the path of making its DevOps solutions available on Private Cloud so customers can build a continuous software delivery pipeline and achieve the balance between optimization of IT resources and market innovation.
IBM is announcing new services in its portfolio of app development solutions known as DevOps; many of which will be delivered this month via Bluemix. Built on Cloud Foundry, Bluemix combines the strength of IBM software, third party services and open technologies to provide DevOps in the cloud.
DevOps helps continuously deliver software through an integrated, rapid development environment; easy access to mobile app user feedback; and the ability to scale apps seamlessly from single developer experiments to enterprise-grade global development teams. These benefits are achieved in part by Bluemix’s ability to move between cloud and on-premise networks in a hybrid environment, marrying two broad categories of systems: systems of record, such as core banking and accounting systems, and systems of engagement, such as mobile, situational and social apps.
New DevOps services on Bluemix include an application scanning service which helps developers build security into the design of web and mobile apps via rapid testing; continuous deployment pipeline service that automates the activities of deploying and releasing applications on Bluemix; workflow service to embed processes into development; and embeddable reporting to enable app analytics once a service is provisioned.
What’s New?
For Continuous Business Planning
Agile Planning and Tracking - with improved user experience to quickly plan and execute agile projects
For Collaborative Development
Connect to or host Git repositories to develop and edit code and auto-deploy in Bluemix to speed changes through the delivery process
Start coding instantly with the built-in Web IDE or bring your own coding tools.
Continuous Delivery Pipeline on Bluemix to quickly build, compile, test and package apps
For Release and Deploy
Continuous Delivery Pipeline to automate release and deployment in Bluemix
For customer feedback and optimization
Mobile Quality Assurance with frictionless bug and in-app crash reporting to reduce time to feedback for mobile apps
Sentiment Analysis to accelerate feedback loops from app ratings and reviews
Proof Point:
FIMC Taps Bluemix DevOps to Raise the Bar on Customer Mobile Experiences
Financial Insurance Management Corp. (FIMC), an insurance provider offering customized membership programs and services, recognized a need for a high-quality mobile experience to enhance client engagement and improve customer service. Using Bluemix DevOps, IBM business partner PointSource worked with FIMC to build a mobile interface which connects clients to on-premise business applications, giving them access to one-touch roadside assistance, targeted promotions, claim submissions and deductible management, as well as a channel to interact with FIMC via social media for faster and more direct communication.
“Before implementing our mobile platform, our members sometimes did not realize some of their most valued services – such as roadside assistance or discounts – had expired, and we wanted to streamline the renewal process to ensure more continuous service,” said Scott Liberatore, CEO of FIMC. “Now we have an engagement model that reaches members directly, and we’ve increased our customer renewal rate by 30 percent.”
(FIMC) offers customer service, point-of-sale training, regulatory compliance and marketing support to a diverse set of customers, including Wells Fargo, Precision Tune, AAMCO and Citibank. FIMC produces customized packages under its customers’ names, then provides services to fully manage the packages. Founded in 1974, FIMC is headquartered in Sarasota, Florida.
Solution components:
Software
IBM® Rational® Test Workbench
IBM Worklight
IBM DevOps Services for Bluemix
IBM Business Partner
PointSource, LLC
Business challenge:
FIMC wanted to deliver increased value to members by offering an enhanced, high-quality mobile experience. FIMC hoped that by providing mobile services, it would simplify the renewal process for members. In the past, members might not realize that their roadside assistance or discount services had expired until they tried to use them. At that point, they would have to use traditional means, such as email or a phone call, to contact FIMC to renew their service. FIMC wanted to streamline this process so that members could easily renew from any location, ensuring more continuous service. Additionally, FIMC wanted to deliver faster access to its benefits and promotions, helping members gain more value from their memberships and thereby increasing the likelihood that they would want to renew.
Benefits:
By putting benefits right in front of members, the new mobile application has helped FIMC increase its renewal rate. FIMC is now better positioned to build customer loyalty through an optimized mobile experience. With help from PointSource, it can develop, deploy and manage the apps it needs to maintain near-real-time connectivity to customers, quickly and efficiently. The sophisticated, intuitive GUI of the mobile application facilitates ease of use and enhanced company branding, helping FIMC increase interaction with its existing customer base.
• New capabilities in IBM UrbanCode Deploy v6.1 include:
Support deployment of native applications to environments on z/OS
Organizations can now leverage IBM UrbanCode Deploy to bring development teams together on one solution to speed the delivery of inter-dependent, multi-platform applications. To meet the needs of clients developing native z/OS applications, IBM has added the ability to deploy and promote incremental changes, also referred to as a package, to a target partitioned data set on z/OS. Users will also have the ability to rollback a previously deployed package from a target environment.
•Enhanced platform support for Websphere Application Server
Using the existing Websphere Application Server and Middleware Configuration for Websphere Application Server integrations, users can set up fully automated, reliable configurations and deploy application components to WebSphere Application Server on z/OS.
Optimization of globally distributed deployments across multiple data centers
In today's market, many enterprises have globally distributed teams with the need to manage development, test, and production deployments at numerous locations all over the world. To improve the performance and mitigate inherent network latency in geographically co-located high availability scenarios, users will have the option in IBM UrbanCode Deploy v6.1 to enable the relay server to retrieve and store local copies of deployment artifacts from the central server. Rather than using the relay server to communicate directly to the central server, agents will be able to download artifacts directly from relay server, improving the speed of application deployments.
Snapshot export and import support to manage and promote automation processes across environments and teams
Many customers need the ability to safely and easily make process and configurations changes in a environment that is completely isolated from production. These same customers may also have distributed teams with varying levels of ownership and expertise and require that process configurations be selectively shared among terms. IBM UrbanCode Deploy v6.1 now supports the ability to export and import deployment processes and configurations so that users will be able to develop and test automation in development environments, promote to production servers and share among teams without impacting existing deployments.
Ability to configure more fine-grained edit permissions
To meet the needs of administrators that require the ability to control edit permissions in a more fine-grained manner, IBM UrbanCode Deploy v6.1 provides sub-permissions capabilities under the existing Edit permissions. Sub-permissions will enable you to control access at more specific levels rather than granting users the ability to edit objects, like components, at a higher level and unintentionally provide users with the ability to alter the current deployment processes.
Automatic deployment of mobile applications running on devices and emulators
IBM UrbanCode Deploy enhanced capabilities to achieve continuous delivery of mobile applications with support for emulators and physical devices in Google Android SDK. Users will be able deploy their Android application to a target emulator or physical device for testing.
For information on the latest integrations and additional information: https://www.ibmdw.net/urbancode/products/urbancode-deploy/whats-new/
New capabilities in IBM UrbanCode Release v6.1 include:
Ability to schedule events on a single enterprise release calendar
The ability to schedule and publish financial black-out dates, holidays and enterprise release dates as well as custom event types in a single calendar enable users to create a cadence for software delivery across multiple lines of business. You can quickly display event details and filter the calendar by release, environment, or event types to provide more flexibility while analyzing and reporting on release and deployment activities.
Reservation capabilities to better manage environment usage across multiple release effort and activities
Users are able to quickly identify available environments and reserve one or more for a specific phase of a release or activities, such as testing or infrastructure maintenance over a range of dates. If a conflict is detected for a reservation, a warning will be displayed to the user, detailing the potential conflicts. Real-time status of environment availability and dependencies among release efforts will improve control of utilization and help minimize unnecessary delays caused by environment contention across project teams and release.
Ability to reuse process checkpoint assets to efficiently plan multiple releases
In many cases, organizations will have standard checkpoints that are applicable to more than one release and want to easily define and apply to multiple releases at a time. Templates are introduced to allow release process checkpoints to be harvested and reused across multiple releases without repeat data entry thus minimizing the amount of manual rework needed to setup releases across the entire enterprise.
Support for high availability via clustering
As you deploy many thousands of users, high availability becomes more critical. IBM UrbanCode Release v6.1 now supports the ability to set up multiple servers in a clustered configuration through the use of a load balancer to distribute traffic between the servers.
Full multi-cultural and translation support
IBM UrbanCode Deploy and IBM urbanCode Release v6.1 are available in the following languages: English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
It includes approximately 130 departments and agencies. .
Need? the Government lacked a single, centralized source of truth, which made reporting and management difficult and time consuming. It also lacked consistent, standardized processes and tools, which affected the level of visibility, quality and lengthened time to market. The government decided to launch a financial management transformation initiative, to introduce consistent financial processes across all of its departments and agencies and choose a more flexible and full-featured solution.Solution? Government implemented an updated ERP solution based on SAP applications. The client also implemented a suite of IBM Rational software to provide a collaborative lifecycle-management platform. By implementing a suite of IBM Rational software and SAP applications, the Government gained a centralized platform that provides a single source of truth for all data and development processes. The client can now manage change quickly, efficiently and more cost effectively for both SAP and non-SAP solutions. Using the Rational software, the organization established a unified and standardized set of tools and best practices to help maintain a higher quality level and accelerate time to market. The client also gained full test automation and lifecycle traceability, enabling staff to track and monitor project progress for more accurate reporting. Finally, the solution enables near-real-time planning capabilities and provides workflow process enforcement across all project assets.Real Business Results? The single source of truth resulted into 90% improvement in efficiency and by managing change across SAP and non SAP applications, the government improved 80% productivity. Collaborative ALM provided government end to end traceability between business and IT requirements, changes and quality management. This benefited them in reducing overall testing cost by 40%.
