About us <ul><li>Established in May 2000 </li></ul><ul><li>User led organisation of disabled people </li></ul><ul><li>Emphasis is not on an individual’s impairment, but rather on the barriers which disabled people face in their everyday lives </li></ul><ul><li>(the Social Model of disability) </li></ul>

  4. 4. Compass Disability Network <ul><li>A network of disabled people, carers and organisations that represent or support disabled people </li></ul><ul><li>Providing consultation & representation opportunities for disabled people </li></ul>

Past consultation & Representation Opportunities <ul><li>Compass Disability Network has been involved in many different groups and boards throughout Somerset e.g. Equality South West, the Police Independent Advisory Group, Stronger Communities, the Sensory Loss Project Board and the Active Living Board. </li></ul>

What is the Voice & Influence Project (VIP)? <ul><li>The funding for this project came from the Somerset Community Infrastructure Providers Partnership </li></ul><ul><li>The idea behind this project was to recruit & equip ‘community champions’ to develop the voices of their communities & enable them to be heard by decision makers </li></ul>

Equipping Champions <ul><li>To help equip Champions in their role we put together a 5 day training programme which included: </li></ul><ul><li>Communicating with confidence </li></ul><ul><li>Presentation skills </li></ul><ul><li>Understanding disability </li></ul><ul><li>Commonality of issues </li></ul>

Developing systems to ensure Champions are properly supported in their role <ul><li>Developing a Representation Pack that includes policies, procedures & information on representing </li></ul><ul><li>Quarterly peer support meetings </li></ul><ul><li>Developing monitoring and evaluating systems to evaluate the role of the Champion including a Volunteer Satisfaction survey </li></ul>

  10. 10. Future of the VIP <ul><li>Evaluation of current representation opportunities in Somerset </li></ul><ul><li>Placing Champions on panels/boards </li></ul><ul><li>Further training e.g. specific disability awareness </li></ul><ul><li>Scope for a Volunteer Co-ordinator </li></ul>
