  • 1. Ways for our young to keep pure. Psa. 119:9 How Can the Young Cleanse Their Way?
  • 2. Introduction
    • While the teaching belongs to parents, wise children understand that their role in their years of youth is to learn.
      • Teaching foundational truths via creative ways maximizes the ability for our children to learn.
      • There is no better passage in all the scriptures to diligently impress God’s will on our youth than the 119 th Psalm.
  • 3. Introduction
    • What our young need to learn:
      • Left to themselves they will get in a rut of a God-less life.
      • They need to be encouraged to fill their whole lives with God’s laws.
      • That older brethren among us have ways to encourage them in the Lord.
  • 4. The 119 th (Acrostic) Psalm
    • The Acrostic Psalm.
      • Aleph to Tav (the equivalent to our A-Z): 22 Hebrew letters.
      • Each strophe (like a paragraph or a stanza) broken into eight verses each: Thus, 176 verses.
      • Each stanza of eight verses begins with the succeeding letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and all eight verses start with the same letter.
      • Eight overlapping word themes: way(s), testimony, precept, statute, commandment, word, ordinance, path, truth.
  • 5. The 119 th (Acrostic) Psalm
    • Summary – the writer of this psalm wants to convey some very important truths:
      • That God’s word (law, commandments, etc.) is from the beginning (Aleph) to the end (Tav) of one’s life.
      • That we read it, meditate upon it, pray for the wisdom that comes from it.
  • 6. Psalm 119:9-16 – Cleansing The Way of the Young
    • The situation: left to himself, the way of man – from his youth – is defiled.
      • He need to learn he is not able to direct his own steps. Jer. 10:23
      • Unless directed upon God’s words he will be caught up in youthful lusts: covetousness, immorality, etc. 1 Tim. 6:11; 2 Tim. 2:22
      • Unless God’s word continuously drives him his ways eventually gets stuck in a rut.
      • In the end this (bad) rut only defiles the young man of God.
  • 7. Psalm 119:9-16 – Cleansing The Way of the Young
    • The answer: cleanse himself in the way of God (his laws, commandments, etc.)
      • Obedience to God’s word. V. 9
      • Internalizing God’s word. V. 10-11
      • Rejoicing in God’s word. V. 12-14
      • Meditating upon God’s word. V. 15-16
  • 8. What The Older among the Young Can Do
    • You (those over 40) can teach them the way of the Lord.
      • To often the young are teaching the younger, maybe even their elders. cp. Job. 32:1-7
      • But wisdom – from those who love and faithfully serve the Lord for many years – are from the aged. Job. 8:8-10; 12:12
      • Older brethren: spend time among the youth and teach/counsel them.
  • 9. What The Older among the Young Can Do
    • You can also spend time with them to encourage them in the way of the Lord.
      • Have the young in your homes: Bible studies, have children share time with each other in your presence, etc.
      • Men - take them out: hunting/fishing/camping (life-skills); helping and visiting others in need.
      • Women – continue what you’ve started: crafts (quilting, sewing, etc.); helping and visiting others in need.
      • In other words: spend time with them; use your wisdom/experience and build them up as they continue to cleanse their ways .
  • 10. Conclusion
    • One of the strengths of our youth is their zeal and they make some of the great examples of faith as noted in the scriptures.
    • Yet, behind the scenes of these young faithful men are their elders who have guided them to fill the whole of their lives unto the Lord.
