Are You Shortchanging God and Others - Presentation Transcript

    1. Are You Shortchanging God and Others? Can we give too much of ourselves? 2 Cor. 9:6-11
    2. Introduction
      • A question recently asked: “When is (or is it) giving of ourselves too much?”
        • Ultimately, it is impossible to give too much of ourselves.
        • We also have a responsibility to provide for the welfare of our families. Cp. 1 Tim. 5:8
        • Mixed into our quandary are the wants of the flesh that keep us from being pure in our attitude and practice in what and how we give to those in need.
    3. Introduction
      • To answer this question, we need the mind of God and not our own preconceptions.
        • Many give a “what I think” without contextually sound biblical answers. cp. 1 Tim. 5:8
        • When we move from doctrine into the realm of opinion, we must remember to accept and foster unity through our differences. (Rom. 14)
        • Ultimately, we must work to draw closer and closer to the perfect biblical teaching on giving.
    4. Introduction
      • Maturing in biblical giving minimizes the spectrum of our opinions and maximizes our time, energy and resources in glorifying our great God through this ministry.
        • Thus, we first focus on true biblical giving.
        • Then we will focus on the opinion of if/when we give too much of ourselves.
    5. Biblical Giving – It’s More Than You Think
      • God’s judgment regarding the giving.
        • Every second we live, the very health we enjoy, the material possessions we accumulate, etc. are gifts from God. Jas. 1:17
        • As lovers of God we should follow the sacrificial life of our Savior. Matt. 22:37-39; Matt. 25:31-46
    6. Biblical Giving – It’s More Than You Think
      • But, we (Christians) live in the flesh and are often blind to true biblical giving.
        • Disciples are taught to give differently than the world. Cp. Lk. 6:30-36
          • The world does good only to those who do good to them: God loves the sinner. Rom. 5:6
          • The world lends only to those whom they expect to receive back from: God doesn’t lend, He gives. Jn. 3:16
        • God’s children are not immune from being lead by the flesh: filled with covetousness. Dt. 15:7-11; Acts 5:1-5; 2 Cor. 9:1-5
    7. Biblical Giving – It’s More Than You Think
      • The attitudes and practice of biblical giving. 2 Cor. 9:6-7
        • Giving purposefully.
        • Giving cheerfully.
        • Giving generously.
        • Giving sacrificially.
