Soul based ethics going beyond the senses

  1. 1. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriSOUL BASED ETHICSGOING BEYOND THE SENSESProfessor Jayashree SadriAndDr Sorab Sadri
  2. 2. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriTWO SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT The soul based school looks uponspiritualism and the equilibrium between theheart soul and mind to determine values andethics. The mind based school looks upon thewillingness to be ethical and the ability to beethical to determine values and ethics.
  3. 3. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriTWO FUNDAMENTAL ISSUES INUNDERSTANDING SOCIAL REALITY.The Phenomena : what weperceive through the five sensoryorgans.The Noumena : what we perceivebeyond the five sensory organs.
  4. 4. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriREALITY There is no doubt that we see what wewant to see, hear what we want to hearand understand only what we want tounderstand. Hence our perception of reality is bynature subjective and person specific.
  5. 5. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriThe DichotomyTHE DICHOTOMY BETWEEN SUBJECTIVE ANDOBJECTIVE PERCEPTIONS IS FALSE.We cannot be objective without using a scientificmethod which only allows us to approximateobjectivity and not attain it fully. To claim to be objective is itself a subjectivenotion!
  6. 6. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriTHE LIMITS OF MAN Man’s intellect is too miniscule tounderstand the larger reality that is nature. What we understand of the totality isconditioned by the limits of our ownintellect. Hence at any point of time our knowledgeis limited unlike Mother Nature that islimitless.
  7. 7. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriIs Social Reality A Constant? Social scientists have always said thatsocial reality is mutable or is constantlychanging. If the social reality is mutable then ourperception of it is also mutable. If our perception is mutable, how can welay claim to being consistently objective?
  8. 8. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriThe Two Views Mind based thinkerstalk of the rational-ethical view involvingthe ability criterion andthe willingness criterion. They are restricted tothe interplay of theheart and mind. Soul based thinkers talkof the spiritual-ethicalview involving man’srelation with the HigherBeing. They are restricted bytheir own understandingof this relationship.
  9. 9. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriThe Rainbow Concept The mind based thinkersays that perfection is arainbow that can neverbe reached but we canonly move towards it. The soul based thinkersays that man can beso evolved that he canbe one with the HigherBeing and thus attainperfection.
  10. 10. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriThe Difference Mind Based Thinkersare Epicureans. Man is an economic, political, social andrational being. He has relations, wantsand needs that aresocially determined andthat have to be gratified. Soul Based Thinkersare Stoics. Man is a spiritual beingcreated for a divinepurpose. His relations, wants andneeds are pre-determined by a HigherSelf and they have adefinite purpose.
  11. 11. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriThree ViewsCharvak Karma Yoga Bhakti YogaMan is born toenjoy in a Godless world.Unfulfilleddesires need tobe satisfiedthough karma.Acceptance ofreality as it isand living withinit in harmony.
  12. 12. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriEthics and Man How man looks at ethics is determined by whichof the three views given above has been acceptedby that individual. Ethics is guided by spiritual laws that areconstant, time tested and scientific. Values are inherent to man and is conditioned bythe level of his consciousness.
  13. 13. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriSoul Based Ethics Man is a spiritual being. Man is governed by the laws of MotherNature. Man has to live in harmony with MotherNature. This harmony is the fountain head of ethics.
  14. 14. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriTRUTHMind based thinkers say that all truth isrelative and that the only absolute truthis God or the Larger Immensity.Soul based thinkers say that truth isabsolute at all times and under allconditions.
  15. 15. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriMIND BASEDDeath is the only thing that is absolutelycertain in life.Even birth and relationships are notcertain. There is no room for destiny, karma or anything supernatural.
  16. 16. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriSOUL BASEDThree things are pre-determined byNature and so are definite in life:BirthLife partnerDeath
  17. 17. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriTheir SimilarityBoth views believe that man is the beginningand the end of all science. That man is boththe subject and the object of all inquiry. Both views have an inherent respect for man.
  18. 18. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriTheir Difference God made man for a definite purpose accordingto the soul based view. Man saw God in his own limited image accordingto the mind based view.THIS LIMIT OF UNDERSTANDING THERELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MAN AND GOD (FORBOTH SCHOOLS) IS DETERMINED BY THELEVEL OF MAN’S CONSCIOUSNESS.
  19. 19. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriMind based viewMan must pursue three things:Gyan : knowledgeBuddhi: IntellectVivek: Consciousness.
  20. 20. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriSoul based viewMan has to fulfill his ultimate and pre-determined purpose in life.Man develops himself spiritually i.e. beyond thebody, mind and intellect levels.Man takes along this developed spiritualknowledge alone with him after death to be bornagain with the same level.
  21. 21. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriThe Kriya Maan KarmaIf a man refuses to develop his consciousness hecan regress backwards and take a lower form ofconsciousness in his next life.Higher level beings on earth can assist a man inhis path of spiritual development. When a person is fully prepared then the higherlevel being (guru) seeks him out. This guru is always prepared to help others.
  22. 22. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriMind based thinkers have given man thebirth right to live as he/she feels fit aslong as he/she does not disturb or hurtothers or acts to impede their freedom. The concept of “free will” is very muchimportant to life and liberty.
  23. 23. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriSoul based thinkers say that man hasevery right to achieve higher levels ofconsciousness and always live inharmony with nature.Progressively man can even be one withhis Maker. {Ahm Brahmasmi} and declarethe Maker is I {Tatwam Asi}.
  24. 24. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriThe mind based thinker saysthat rational choice dictates allaction including ethics.Hence man must be both willing andable to act ethically under thecircumstances in which he findshimself at a given moment in time.
  25. 25. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriThe soul based thinker says that all actionsare pre-determined but man has the choiceof either following nature or going againstit. In either case the results or fruits of theactions will have to be borne by the doersince he/she is ultimately responsible forwhat he/she does.
  26. 26. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriTHE INDIANMANAGERIAL SCENEThe fact however remains that a large majorityof Indian managers take the Praxis route whenfaced with an ethical dilemma. Yet they talk offree thought and rationality all the time.
  27. 27. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriPOSITIVE ASPECTS OFPRAXIS MANAGERS THEY ARE GOOD TEAM WORKERS. THEY CONFORM EASILY TO THECORPORATE CULTURE. DECISION EXECUTION BECOMESPREDICTABLE AND HENCE POLICYOUTCOMES ARE KNOWN.
  28. 28. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriNEGATIVE ASPECTS OFPRAXIS MANAGERS MANAGERS ARE NOT WILLING TO STANDUP AND BE COUNTED. MANAGERS THRIVE ON MEDIOCRITY ANDPROMOTE ONLY THOSE WHO TOW THEIRLINE. INNVOVATION AND CREATIVITY GETSSIDE LINED IN THE PERSUIT OFCONFORMITY.
  29. 29. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriTHE CONFUSED INDIANMANAGEROn one hand the manager is rational, professional and uses the acceptance /conformity option in daily life.On the other hand this manager believes infate, destiny and the supernatural.
  30. 30. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriGiven the Indian Psyche’It is more plausible and easy to look atmanagerial ethics in terms of the soul(spiritualism) than in terms of the mind(objective rationalism).
  31. 31. Jayashree Sadri and Sorab SadriFUTURE AGENDA FOR SOULBASED RESEARCH IN INDIA TO VALIDATE OR REFUTE THE XLRI-NITIE STUDY. TO SEE IF BEHAVIOUR PATTERNSCHANGE WITH STATUS AND GENDER. TO NOTE IF BEHAVIOUR PATTERNS AREINDUSTRY AND PROFESSION SPECIFIC.
