NIEMANN-PICK, TIPO A
Los niños que tienen enfermedades terminales o que amenazan sus vidas, como el estudio del caso siguiente de una niña con la enfermedad Niemann-Pick, Tipo A (NPA), pueden beneficiarse de la rehabilitación acuática.
Los niños nacidos con NPA carecen de la enzima ácida sphingomyelinase--enzyme acid sphingomyelinase (ASM).

NIEMANN-PICK TYPE A
Children with life threatening illnesses, such as the following case study of a child with Niemann-Pick Disease, Type A (NPA), can benefit from aquatic rehabilitation.
Children born with NPA are missing the enzyme acid sphingomyelinase (ASM).

Estudio del Caso de la Enfermedad
Niemann-Pick, Tipo A
Esta deficiencia de la enzima produce deterioro neurológico progresivo, profundo retraso en el desarrollo, espasticidad progresiva, epilepsia, hígado y bazo agrandados, dificultades para alimentarse, pérdida de habilidades motrices, distensión abdominal, hipersensibilidad al movimiento y descoloramiento pardusco amarillento de la piel.

NIEMANN-PICK DISEASE, TYPE A
This enzyme deficiency results in progressive neurological impairment, profound developmental delay, progressive spasticity, epilepsy, enlarged liver/spleen, muscular weakness, feeding difficulties, loss of motor skills, abdominal distention, hypersensitivity to movement, and skin with a yellowish brownish discoloration.

Para lograr una sesión acuática eficaz de 30 minutos de duración, Sophia necesita 2 practicantes acuáticos experimentados ya que ella carece de control postural de su cabeza y cuello; además ella requiere de un tubo gástrico nasal permanente.

SOPHIA HERZOG SACHS BEGAN AQUATIC THERAPY AT 14 MONTHS.
Our goal is to improve Sophia’s quality of life while her parents pursue life saving treatment that prolongs her life.
Due to her lack of head, neck, and postural control, and the requirement of a continuous indwelling nasal gastric tube, Sophia requires 2 experienced aquatic practitioners to achieve an effective 30-minute aquatic session.

SOPHIA HERZOG SACHS EMPEZÓ LA TERAPIA ACUÁTICA CUANDO APENAS TENÍA 14 MESES DE EDAD.

SOPHIA ES EXTREMADAMENTE SENSIBLE AL MOVIMIENTO.
Sophia es extremadamente sensible al movimiento y se le debe posicionar cuidadosamente.
Ella tolera algún tipo de masaje pero el movimiento de sus articulaciones es doloroso.
A ella no le gusta que sus extremidades sean acariciadas.
En cambio si le gusta tener una mano puesta suavemente sobre su cuerpo.

HYPERSENSITIVITY TO MOVEMENT
Sophia is hypersensitive to movement and must be positioned carefully.

She tolerates some massage but joint movement is painful and Sophia does not like to have her limbs stroked. Instead she likes to have a hand gently placed on her in one place.

UNA MANO ENCIMA DE SU HÍGADO.
Cuando su abdomen se estira más que lo usual y su cara demuestra amargura, Choubabko pone una mano encima de su hígado mientras su otro brazo sirve de base para la cabeza y torso superior de Sophia.
Entretanto, Azevedo sostiene con una mano el tubo gástrico nasal, previamente desconectado, fuera del agua, evalúa y monitorea su respiración, y lleva a Sophia entre un rango suave de ejercicios de movimiento y extensión.

HAND ON LIVER
When her abdomen is more distended than usual and her face more jaundiced, Choubabko will place one hand over her liver while the other arm cradles her head and upper torso.

Meanwhile, Azevedo holds the disconnected indwelling nasal gastric tube out of the water with one hand, monitors her breathing, and leads Sophia in gentle range of motion and extension exercises.

Es importante notar que el cuidado paliativo no se limita sólo a las personas que están próximas a morir y puede asimismo proporcionarse concurrentemente con tratamientos que prolongan la vida.

PALLIATIVE CARE IN WARM WATER POOLS
It is important to note that palliative care is NOT limited to people thought to be dying and can be provided concurrently with life-prolonging treatments.

Para Sophia, nosotros estamos proporcionando el cuidado paliativo en los ambientes acuáticos específicamente centralizándolo en el control del dolor, facilitando la respiración y funcionamiento intestinal, y estimulando la relajación muscular progresiva.

For Sophia, we are providing palliative care in the aquatic environments that specifically addresses pain management, assistance in breathing and bowel functioning, and progressive muscle relaxation.
