Pollution

 1. 1. POLLUTION Control Population To Control Pollution
 2. 2.

The Earth gives us food, water, clothing and shelter. Human beings use the environment for different activities. Some of these activities pollute our environment. Most of the pollution that we face today is due to increasing population. Thus, human beings are greatest threat to the environment.

Pollution is mainly of four major types:

Air,

Water,

Soil and

Noise pollution.

 3. 3. AIR POLLUTION

The mixing of harmful gases and other particles in the air is called air pollution.

Some of the substances which cause air pollution come from natural sources. Certain others come from man-made sources e.g. industrial chimneys. Sandstorms, volcanic eruptions, forest fires and pollens from plants and flowers are natural causes of air pollution.

 4. 4. WATER POLUTION

When water sources get polluted, it causes water pollution. Both fresh and salty water can get polluted. Sometimes underground water also get polluted. Water pollution is usually caused by human activities such as:

Dumping wastes including harmful chemicals from factories

Dumping household waste

Leakage from oil tankers

Water pollution harm the plants and animals that live in polluted water.

 5. 5. SOIL POLLUTION

The pollution of soil or land is caused when harmful substances are released into the soil or accumulate on the land.

The main sources of soil pollution are:

Solid wastes such as garbage

Refuse from mines

Refuse from forests and agriculture.

Pollution makes the soil infertile. It harms the organisms living in the soil.

 6. 6. NOISE POLLUTION

The presence of loud noises in the atmosphere is called noise pollution. Loud noises are harmful to all living things. The intensity of sound is measured in decibels.

The softest sound we can hear is about 20 decibels.

Any sound louder than 90 decibel is harmful for the ears.

Rock music is more than 100 decibels.

 7. 7.

The main causes of noise pollution are:

Cars and bus horns

Airplanes

Loudspecers

Machines in factories

Loud music

 8. 8. DO YOU KNOW

On 24 march 1989, about 30 million gollons of crude oil was spilled into the sea, near alaska. It is known as the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

It was one of the world’s worst environmental disaster.

The oil spread over hundreds of kilometers.

Thousands of sea creatures were killed.
