The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is the highestranking administrative nurse in the organization.She is responsible for the practice of nursingthroughout the organization by ensuringconsistency in the standard of practice acrossall clinical settings. As a member of theexecutive team, the CNO supports andfacilitates an interdisciplinary team approach tothe delivery of care. This includes creating anursing environment in which collaboration isvalued and excellence in clinical care,education, and research is promoted and

  5. 5. EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS • A bachelor’s degree in nursing is the minimum requirement • A master’s degree in compulsory in many hospitals • Minimum 5-7 yr exp in clinical nursing management. • Certification courses may be essential in some places

  7. 7. She/he will1.Be responsible for efficient running of Nursing Services of the hospital.2. Assist the Director in formulating broad policies concerning Nursing Services.3. Disseminate the aims, objectives and policies regarding patient care to all cadres of nursing services.4. Implement policies and procedures of Institute regarding nursing services.5.Plan future requirements of nurses and carry out recruitment from time to time.

Contd..6.Plan and disseminate programmes for continuing education & re-orientation for nurses.7.Closely interact with other hospitals regarding improvement of patient care.8.Encourage research by nurses in their work areas.9.Guide and counsel the sub-ordinate nursing staff.10. Keep herself abreast of latest happenings in nursing care by attending national / international conferences.
