Road Accident
PREFACE
This presentation is about the most emerging
problem of India that is “ROAD ACCIDENT”.
This presentation highlights the need to
prevent accidents , causes of accidents , its
statistics , its impact over people , injuries
caused by accident , humanity during
accidents ,
inhumanity during accidents and many more .
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I Sonakhi Malla of class IX C and roll no. 49
is very obliged as my teacher Bijaya Mishra
Sir has given me the opportunity to prepare
a presentation on “ROAD ACCIDENT”.I also
want to thank my parents for co-operating
with me to do this presentation .I hope that I
have given my best towards this presentation
as guided by my teacher.
COMMON CAUSES OF ROAD
ACCIDENTS : Over Speeding
 Drunk Driving
 Using Mobile Phones while Driving
 Irresponsible Driving
 Ignoring Safety Precautions
 Not wearing of helmets and seatbelts
 Equipment failure
Road accident
Over speed
When we drive in over
speed we lose control
easily.
It is very difficult to slow
down , mainly in rainy and
snowy season.
It can be controlled by
driving at low speed and if
the brakes has ABS .
While speaking in phone :
• Please do not talk in the
phone while driving in the
vehicle because it distracts
people which lead to road
accident .
Without wearing helmet:
Without wearing helmet is very
big headache for the some people
because they don’t like it but they
should beware that it may lead to
accident.
Without Wearing seat belts:
 Without wearing seat belt while driving
in the vehicles are very dangerous
because if accident occurs a person may
move out of the vehicle and that may
cause death.
Accidents due to Protruding loads:-
• Over 1,40,000 people lose their lives annually due to road
accidents in India. One law that continues to be routinely
violated is the ban put on trucks and other vehicles from
carrying protruding rods. In 2013 alone, 9,087 people were
killed in the 29,573 road accidents that were caused due to
Protruding Rods /
Loads :-
Sleep-causeof many road accident:
• 26,200 people die in road accidents each year in India just
because drivers don't get sleep. That is three people every
hour,” says Ramesh Agarwal, CEO of Agarwal Packers &
Movers Ltd and the former president of the All India
Transport Association. In a survey conducted by his
company with over 200 drivers, Agarwal found that
although the drivers would rest for 7-8 hours, they would
not sleep a wink. The reasons were valid and plenty. Chief
among them were the fear of goods theft, petrol theft and
harassment by the police. Instead of sleeping, these
drivers would have to guard their vehicles. The fatigue and
lack of sleep became a leading cause of road accidents.
• Agarwal hit upon the idea of creating a resting stop for
EQUIPMENT FAILURE
•Manufacturers are required by law to design and
engineer cars that meet a minimum safety .
•Many companies have produced safe vehicles
that are easy and safe to drive. The most cited
types of equipment failure are loss of brakes, tire
blowouts or tread separation, and steering /
suspension failure.
Road accident
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
1) Existing speed limits should be brought down further.
2) Heavy penalty should be imposed for those who cause accidents.
3) Diving tests for issue of Driving license is to be more challenging
4) Lower age limit for two wheeler and Heavy Vehicle license should be
raised to 21.
5) Existing traffic rules should be strictly enforced.
SIGNS OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS
Effects of Road Accident
 1,14,590 deaths occur in INDIA in 2007.
 Every 15 minutes average 350 deaths occur in India .
 National Health Service (NHS)spends 1.3 billion euro on
treatment of injuries.
 Total economic loss of India is due to road accident is
more than Rs. 3,00,000 crore !!!!!!!!!
 One child is killed in a accident every three minutes in
the world . Every hour one person lost his life in Europe.
Some accident which took place in
India:-
Some accidents took place in the highways:
Factsabout Road Accidents
1. The global annual cost of RTA is almost 230 billion dollars.
2. 1.2 million people Die every year due to Road Traffic
Accidents (RTA).
3. Every day, there are 3300 deaths and 6600 serious injuries
on the road in the world.
4. Approximately 850,000 deaths occur in those who are under
45 years of age in developing countries and are the sole bread-
winners for their families.
5. Road Traffic Accidents cause injury to about 50million people
in the world.
Road accident
PREVENTION OF
ROAD ACCIDENT:-
St rict punishment should be
enf orced by gover nment if a person
drives in over speed
Tamper proof speed cont rollers
should be inst alled in all vehicles.
Two wheelers should not exceeded
50-70km/ h .
All t he r ules should be f ollowed
Road SafetyRoad Safety
WHAT IS ROAD SAFETY?
an indication of how
safe individual
users are on some particular
road, or on the roads
belonging to some region.
•The main danger to road
users is the likelihood of a
traffic collision.
ROAD SAFETY – INDIA’S BIGGEST
EMERGING CHALLENGE :
India with just 1% of the vehicular population accounts for 10% of the Road Fatalities.
A multicultural, multi-religious democracy of more than one billion has 29 official
languages.
With its size, population, diversity, urbanization and motorization; Road Safety is the
biggest emerging challenge.
Road Accident Statistics
More than 1.2 million people are
killed in Road Accidents
WORLDWIDE every year.
3 TO4 % OF GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT IS
LOST IN ROADACCIDENTS.
ONE CHILDIS KILLEDIN ROADACCIDENTS,
EVERY THREE MINUTES IN THE WORLD.
FOR MALES AGED 15-44, ROAD TRAFFIC INJURIES RANK SECOND
(BEHIND HIV/AIDS) AS THE LEADING CAUSE OF PREMATURE DEATH
AND ILL HEALTH WORLDWIDE .
BLACK SPOTS:-
accident s in I ndia are at t ribut ed t o t he
negligence of t he driver alone. But if a high
number of accident s have t aken place, t he
causes could be mult iple - it could range f rom
a sharp drop or corner on a st raight road, so

and management ..
BLACK SPOTS IN
INDIA:-
areas have been separated and this makes it essential for people to
cross over. In spite of monthly fatalities, the National Highways Authority
of India (NHAI) has refused to provide the public with any provision of a
foot-over-bridge or subway to prevent recurring accidents, saying it does
not fall under its purview.
Another dangerous black spot is Khambatki Ghat on the Mumbai-
Pune expressway. There is a steep 'S' shaped curve which is deceptive.
As a result, vehicles, especially overloaded trucks often topple on the
side, leading to deaths and injuries. It is a basic flaw in road
engineering. According to journalist Murad Patel, over 2000 accidents
have taken place in a span of thelast five years. In spite of over 33% of
accidents occuring due to faulty roads, not a single case has been filed
against the road authorities. Why does the government not take any
action? Journalist Vinita Deshmukh says, "Once the the government
gets its kickbacks and commission, it does not care! Unless you shame
the government officials and the contractors, nothing is going to change.
It will remain commerce over human life."
41% OF CHILDRENin India
DIE every year
Due to road accidents

SCHOOL BUS
ACCIDENTS:-The number of school bus accidents in India paints a scary picture. The rising number of
accidents due to negligence of bus owners or drivers has made parents across the country
cautious. One of the most gruesome tragedies of children dying in a school van happened
in 2008 in Mumbai's Millat Nagar area.
 A school van carrying 12 children caught fire. Six children were burnt to death. Among
the six who survived are Mudassar and Shakeel. Even these kids were badly burned, with
scars for life. Although the cause of the accident was directly related to the faulty and ill-
maintained van, the driver did not face any punishment. But what did happen because of
this accident, was that the Supreme Court of India ordered school buses to follow certain
guidelines. Among the most important are that buses or vans should have a fire
extinguisher and a reliable speed governor.
Over 27,000,000 students travel in 5,00,000 buses across India. They are at risk of being
a victim of someone else's irresponsibility. It is time that we become more vigilant of the
safety rules being followed in these vehicles so that no more children's lives are lost in
such senseless accidents
Road Accident Injury
REASONS OF ROAD
ACCIDENTS INJURIES1. Pedestrian .
2. Cyclist / motorcyclist.
3. Occupants
INJURIES TO PEDESTRAINS:-
1.Primary impact injuries ( the first
part struck ).
2.Secondary impact injuries
( further injury caused by vehicle
).
3.Tertiary injuries or secondary
injuries ( injuries caused by
victim’s striking objects, such as
the ground ).
Road accident
PRIMARY IMPACT INJURY:-
These are the injuries caused by vehicle
when it first struck and Hit the person
whether crossing the road from one side to
the other side or walking with or against the
traffic.
The importance of primary impact injury is
that the body of victim may bear design /
pattern of the part of vehicle in form of
imprint abrasion pattern bruised.
SECONDARY IMPACT
INJURY:-
After sustaining primary impact of injury,
the person may be lifted off the ground and
thrown of the vehicle.
Thus these secondary impact injuries are
resulted from the impact of body of a person
and the vehicle for a second time.
Here the person strike to windshield or
bonnet or placed on the top of car/ vehicle.
SECONDARY / TERTIARY
INJURIES :-These are the injuries that occur after second
impact injuries when the victim is thrown off the
vehicle on the ground.
Here the victim sustain secondary injuries
from the ground. Head injury is more common
though injuries to other part may occur.
Some times the victim may be run over by the
same vehicle and another vehicle.
WHIPLASH INJURY:-
Whiplash injury:-
WHIPLASH INJURY
INTRODUCTION
Whiplash and back injuries are suffered by most victims
involved motor vehicle accident.
Over 200 million people suffer from whiplash in U.S. Rear
impact motor vehicle accident can cause sudden abnormal
motion in the neck.
The word whiplash stands for damage of the bone as well as
tissue.
Even though whiplash is not a life treating injury, it may lead to
partial disability for a prolonged time. After the motor vehicle
accident, most of the people recover from whiplash injuries in a
reasonable amount of time. In some cases, patient may
continue to have the symptoms years after injury.
WHAT CAUSES WHIPLASH ?
Whiplash injuries are caused by rear impact motor vehicle accident. The
force from the impact causes the person’s torso to move forward while the
unrestrained head and neck falls back.
This puts the neck in a hyper extension position. Studies indicate that after
the motor vehicle accident lower cervical vertebrae are forced in to a
hyperextension position while the upper cervical vertebrae is forced to a
hyper-flexed position and causes the cervical spine to assume a ‘S’ shape
which is totally abnormal.
It also causes damages to muscles, ligaments and facet capsule which
hold the cervical vertebrae together
WHIPLASH
SYMPTOMS OF WHIPLASH
The symptoms include neck pain, headache , shoulder pain
and stiffness, dizziness, fatigue, jaw pain and weakness, visual
disturbances and rigging in ears.
In severe cases it may lead to depression, anger, frustration,
anxiety, stress, insomnia and many other symptoms .
TREATMENT OF
WHIPLASHYour doctor may prescribe a soft cervical collar. This is to avoid any
farther injuries.
It is very important to start moving as soon as possible since
immobilization can cause long recovery period.
It also causes muscle atrophy, reduced blood flow and delays healing
of damaged muscles tissue.
Physical therapy will help you to regain the strength of the muscles as
well as reduce pain motion.
BACK
INJURIES
Back Injuries which causes chronic pain
are the worst and most prevalent injury
suffered by the victims involved in car
accident.
Ten percent of these car accident back
injuries can lead to long term pain and
disability in those affected.
Motor vehicle accident can cause
herniated disc, spinal cord injuries, and
compression fractures .
SPRAINS AND
STRAINS:-
when one the ligaments are stretched,
twisted or torn.
The jerky motion during the motor
vehicle accident causes it to happen.
Muscle strain occurs when the muscle
fibers are stretched or torn. The
symptoms include stiffness, bruising,
muscle soreness, numbness or
tingling .
HERNIATED DISC
Our spine is made of 33 vertebrae that are stacked up on top of one another. There
is a rubbery piece of cartilage between these vertebrae and is called the invertebral
disk.
Imagine disk as a tire with gelatin kind of substance on the hole of the tire. The tire
(outer part) is called the annulus and the gelatin type of substance is called the
nucleus Motor vehicle accident causes the discs to slip from its place or to rupture.
As a result, the space the vertebrae decreases and the disk becomes flatter and less
flexible .
When the rough surface of the vertebral joint rub together, inflammation occurs and
may feel pain as the nerves get compressed or irritated. It may occur throughout the
spine or may confine to one disk. In several cases, since the nerve gets compressed,
it may lead to sciatica which is experience by numbness, tingling and even weakness
in arms and legs.
COMPRESSION FRACTURES
Motor vehicle accident can cause compression fractures. It
usually occurs among the older adults.
The force of the impact may create tiny cracks on the
bones which will eventually result in deformity or collapsing
of bone.
Symptoms of compression fracture include difficulty in
breathing and change in posture.
Health Care Costs and Savings:-
The total annual cost of traffic-related bicyclist death and injury among
children ages 14 and under is more than $2.2 billion.
Every dollar spent on a bike helmet saves societies $30 in direct medical costs
and other costs to society.
If 85 percent of all child cyclists wore bicycle helmets in one year, the lifetime
medical cost savings could total between $109 million and $142 million.
A review of hospital discharge data in Washington state found that treatment
for nonfatal bicycle injuries among children ages 14 and under costs more than
$113 million each year, an average of $218,000 per injured child.
Inhumanity during road accidents:-
• Every 60 minutes, 15 persons die in road accidents in India.
According to the Law Commission of India, at least 50% of
fatalities can be prevented if road accident victims receive
medical attention within the first critical hour after the accident.
However, a 2006 study conducted by the Indian Journal of
Surgery shows that 80% of victims in India do not receive
emergency medical care within that Golden Hour because
people don’t help those victims .
• People don’t help the victims of road accident because of the
fear of getting involved in court matters and being arrested by
the police but according to law no action can be taken against
Road accident
Why peopledo not help aroad
accident victim?
• Why do people hesitate to come forward and lend a hand? A 2013
survey conducted by Save LIFE Foundation, an NGO focused on
improving road safety and emergency care in India, shows that 74%
bystanders are unlikely to assist a seriously injured person on the
road, irrespective of whether they are alone at the spot or in the
presence of others. The study, conducted across seven cities, Delhi,
Hyderabad, Kanpur, Mumbai, Indore, Ludhiana and Kolkata, also
offers some insight into why bystanders fail to come forward to assist.
• *88% of bystanders who were unlikely to assist cited legal hassles like
police questioning and court appearances as a deterring factor.
• *74% said they would be more inclined to step forward and help if the
accident occurred in a familiar environment as they were more
confident of receiving help and support.

From Boys to Heroes-Beacon of Hope
• Devendra Kumar Dubey, a resident of Delhi, was riding
a cycle when he was hit by a speeding autorickshaw.
Such was the impact that his cycle was thrown away and
he was flung to the ground. The driver fled the scene,
leaving the autorickshaw behind. Three school boys saw
this and when no one listened to their pleas for help,
they hoisted Mr Dubey in the auto and pushed it to a
nearby hospital. Thanks to this timely intervention,
doctors were able to heal his severely damaged leg .
Angels on the
Road :-• Ridden with potholes, roads in Mysore city not only make
for uncomfortable travel but are dangerous—leading to
frequent, often fatal accidents.
• A group of students from Orchid Public School in Mysore
had been trying to get local authorities to fix the road
leading to their school. Numerous petitions were sent, but
no action was taken so they decided to repair the road
themselves as part of a project for Design for Change, a
global movement which encourages children to come up
with creative solutions to a problem and ways to
implement it.
• The students approached a local road contractor to find
out what was required to repair the potholes. They split up

Saviour on wheels :-
• Imagine you or your close ones being in an accident and
no one coming to help you out. Although bystanders are
afraid of consequences of helping an accident victim, one
man has made this his vocation in life. He used to be an
ambulance driver for the local doctors in Gajraula, Uttar
Pradesh, until one day in 2004 he decided that he would
use his ambulance solely for helping others. His name is
Bhurra.

Traffic Wardens :-• When Odette Katrak returned to India from the UK, she was
appalled by the indiscipline on the roads of Gurgaon. Not the
kind to give up easily, Ms Katrak decided to do something
about it and today champions the cause of road safety as an
activist, writer as well as Road Safety Officer with the Gurgaon
Traffic Police. For the last four years, she has been working in
different ways towards changing behaviour and safety levels on
Gurgaon’s roads, along with other like-minded volunteers. Her
articles in Gurgaon’s newspapers on road safety are incisive
and aimed at hitting the conscience of Gurgaon’s many
educated drivers who blatantly break traffic rules.
• She has interacted with no less than 5000 people on the roads,
personally appealing to them to adhere to traffic rules, and
trained over  2000 people from schools, colleges, corporates,
to become agents of change and spread the message for better

Traffic Baba:-• Clad in a white gown and cap, microphone in hand,
Mukul Chandra Joshi is a familiar sight on major
traffic crossings in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Every
evening, without fail, this 80 year-old insurance
agent, heads for a major traffic junction and gently
tells people to make way for pedestrians , or not to
jump a red signal, or not to drive without a helmet.
• This has been Mr. Joshi’s mission since 2003 after a
close friend lost his son in a road accident. Shaken,
he started thinking of ways to prevent such senseless
deaths. He decided that educating people about
traffic rules and regulations in a kind, calm manner

CONCLUSION
Even though road accident is a very big emerging
problem not only in this country but in other
countries too we can overcome it by applying
some simple preventive methods in our life and
also advicing others to apply those methods in the
life . As we know “PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN
CURE”.
Life is precious, so drive carefully.
Wishing you a safe journey called life…

Road accident

  • 2. PREFACE This presentation is about the most emerging problem of India that is “ROAD ACCIDENT”. This presentation highlights the need to prevent accidents , causes of accidents , its statistics , its impact over people , injuries caused by accident , humanity during accidents , inhumanity during accidents and many more .
  • 3. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I Sonakhi Malla of class IX C and roll no. 49 is very obliged as my teacher Bijaya Mishra Sir has given me the opportunity to prepare a presentation on “ROAD ACCIDENT”.I also want to thank my parents for co-operating with me to do this presentation .I hope that I have given my best towards this presentation as guided by my teacher.
  • 4. COMMON CAUSES OF ROAD ACCIDENTS : Over Speeding  Drunk Driving  Using Mobile Phones while Driving  Irresponsible Driving  Ignoring Safety Precautions  Not wearing of helmets and seatbelts  Equipment failure
  • 6. Over speed When we drive in over speed we lose control easily. It is very difficult to slow down , mainly in rainy and snowy season. It can be controlled by driving at low speed and if the brakes has ABS .
  • 7. While speaking in phone : • Please do not talk in the phone while driving in the vehicle because it distracts people which lead to road accident .
  • 8. Without wearing helmet: Without wearing helmet is very big headache for the some people because they don’t like it but they should beware that it may lead to accident.
  • 9. Without Wearing seat belts:  Without wearing seat belt while driving in the vehicles are very dangerous because if accident occurs a person may move out of the vehicle and that may cause death.
  • 10. Accidents due to Protruding loads:- • Over 1,40,000 people lose their lives annually due to road accidents in India. One law that continues to be routinely violated is the ban put on trucks and other vehicles from carrying protruding rods. In 2013 alone, 9,087 people were killed in the 29,573 road accidents that were caused due to
  • 12. Sleep-causeof many road accident: • 26,200 people die in road accidents each year in India just because drivers don't get sleep. That is three people every hour,” says Ramesh Agarwal, CEO of Agarwal Packers & Movers Ltd and the former president of the All India Transport Association. In a survey conducted by his company with over 200 drivers, Agarwal found that although the drivers would rest for 7-8 hours, they would not sleep a wink. The reasons were valid and plenty. Chief among them were the fear of goods theft, petrol theft and harassment by the police. Instead of sleeping, these drivers would have to guard their vehicles. The fatigue and lack of sleep became a leading cause of road accidents. • Agarwal hit upon the idea of creating a resting stop for
  • 13. EQUIPMENT FAILURE •Manufacturers are required by law to design and engineer cars that meet a minimum safety . •Many companies have produced safe vehicles that are easy and safe to drive. The most cited types of equipment failure are loss of brakes, tire blowouts or tread separation, and steering / suspension failure.
  • 15. PREVENTIVE MEASURES 1) Existing speed limits should be brought down further. 2) Heavy penalty should be imposed for those who cause accidents. 3) Diving tests for issue of Driving license is to be more challenging 4) Lower age limit for two wheeler and Heavy Vehicle license should be raised to 21. 5) Existing traffic rules should be strictly enforced.
  • 16. SIGNS OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS
  • 17. Effects of Road Accident  1,14,590 deaths occur in INDIA in 2007.  Every 15 minutes average 350 deaths occur in India .  National Health Service (NHS)spends 1.3 billion euro on treatment of injuries.  Total economic loss of India is due to road accident is more than Rs. 3,00,000 crore !!!!!!!!!  One child is killed in a accident every three minutes in the world . Every hour one person lost his life in Europe.
  • 18. Some accident which took place in India:-
  • 19. Some accidents took place in the highways:
  • 20. Factsabout Road Accidents 1. The global annual cost of RTA is almost 230 billion dollars. 2. 1.2 million people Die every year due to Road Traffic Accidents (RTA). 3. Every day, there are 3300 deaths and 6600 serious injuries on the road in the world. 4. Approximately 850,000 deaths occur in those who are under 45 years of age in developing countries and are the sole bread- winners for their families. 5. Road Traffic Accidents cause injury to about 50million people in the world.
  • 22. PREVENTION OF ROAD ACCIDENT:- St rict punishment should be enf orced by gover nment if a person drives in over speed Tamper proof speed cont rollers should be inst alled in all vehicles. Two wheelers should not exceeded 50-70km/ h . All t he r ules should be f ollowed
  • 24. WHAT IS ROAD SAFETY? an indication of how safe individual users are on some particular road, or on the roads belonging to some region. •The main danger to road users is the likelihood of a traffic collision.
  • 25. ROAD SAFETY – INDIA’S BIGGEST EMERGING CHALLENGE : India with just 1% of the vehicular population accounts for 10% of the Road Fatalities. A multicultural, multi-religious democracy of more than one billion has 29 official languages. With its size, population, diversity, urbanization and motorization; Road Safety is the biggest emerging challenge.
  • 26. Road Accident Statistics More than 1.2 million people are killed in Road Accidents WORLDWIDE every year.
  • 27. 3 TO4 % OF GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT IS LOST IN ROADACCIDENTS.
  • 28. ONE CHILDIS KILLEDIN ROADACCIDENTS, EVERY THREE MINUTES IN THE WORLD.
  • 29. FOR MALES AGED 15-44, ROAD TRAFFIC INJURIES RANK SECOND (BEHIND HIV/AIDS) AS THE LEADING CAUSE OF PREMATURE DEATH AND ILL HEALTH WORLDWIDE .
  • 30. BLACK SPOTS:- accident s in I ndia are at t ribut ed t o t he negligence of t he driver alone. But if a high number of accident s have t aken place, t he causes could be mult iple - it could range f rom a sharp drop or corner on a st raight road, so oncoming t raf f ic is concealed, poor or concealed warning signs at cross-roads or a hidden j unct ion on a f ast road. I t has t o do wit h poor road design, bad road engineering and management ..
  • 31. BLACK SPOTS IN INDIA:- areas have been separated and this makes it essential for people to cross over. In spite of monthly fatalities, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has refused to provide the public with any provision of a foot-over-bridge or subway to prevent recurring accidents, saying it does not fall under its purview. Another dangerous black spot is Khambatki Ghat on the Mumbai- Pune expressway. There is a steep 'S' shaped curve which is deceptive. As a result, vehicles, especially overloaded trucks often topple on the side, leading to deaths and injuries. It is a basic flaw in road engineering. According to journalist Murad Patel, over 2000 accidents have taken place in a span of thelast five years. In spite of over 33% of accidents occuring due to faulty roads, not a single case has been filed against the road authorities. Why does the government not take any action? Journalist Vinita Deshmukh says, "Once the the government gets its kickbacks and commission, it does not care! Unless you shame the government officials and the contractors, nothing is going to change. It will remain commerce over human life."
  • 32. 41% OF CHILDRENin India DIE every year Due to road accidents
  • 33. School bus plunges into river in AP 18 school children killed
  • 34. Ambala: School bus collides head-on with a truck 8 children crushed to death
  • 35. Mumbai: Kids caught in school bus fire 22 children burned alive
  • 36. SCHOOL BUS ACCIDENTS:-The number of school bus accidents in India paints a scary picture. The rising number of accidents due to negligence of bus owners or drivers has made parents across the country cautious. One of the most gruesome tragedies of children dying in a school van happened in 2008 in Mumbai's Millat Nagar area.  A school van carrying 12 children caught fire. Six children were burnt to death. Among the six who survived are Mudassar and Shakeel. Even these kids were badly burned, with scars for life. Although the cause of the accident was directly related to the faulty and ill- maintained van, the driver did not face any punishment. But what did happen because of this accident, was that the Supreme Court of India ordered school buses to follow certain guidelines. Among the most important are that buses or vans should have a fire extinguisher and a reliable speed governor. Over 27,000,000 students travel in 5,00,000 buses across India. They are at risk of being a victim of someone else's irresponsibility. It is time that we become more vigilant of the safety rules being followed in these vehicles so that no more children's lives are lost in such senseless accidents
  • 38. REASONS OF ROAD ACCIDENTS INJURIES1. Pedestrian . 2. Cyclist / motorcyclist. 3. Occupants
  • 39. INJURIES TO PEDESTRAINS:- 1.Primary impact injuries ( the first part struck ). 2.Secondary impact injuries ( further injury caused by vehicle ). 3.Tertiary injuries or secondary injuries ( injuries caused by victim’s striking objects, such as the ground ).
  • 41. PRIMARY IMPACT INJURY:- These are the injuries caused by vehicle when it first struck and Hit the person whether crossing the road from one side to the other side or walking with or against the traffic. The importance of primary impact injury is that the body of victim may bear design / pattern of the part of vehicle in form of imprint abrasion pattern bruised.
  • 42. SECONDARY IMPACT INJURY:- After sustaining primary impact of injury, the person may be lifted off the ground and thrown of the vehicle. Thus these secondary impact injuries are resulted from the impact of body of a person and the vehicle for a second time. Here the person strike to windshield or bonnet or placed on the top of car/ vehicle.
  • 43. SECONDARY / TERTIARY INJURIES :-These are the injuries that occur after second impact injuries when the victim is thrown off the vehicle on the ground. Here the victim sustain secondary injuries from the ground. Head injury is more common though injuries to other part may occur. Some times the victim may be run over by the same vehicle and another vehicle.
  • 45. WHIPLASH INJURY INTRODUCTION Whiplash and back injuries are suffered by most victims involved motor vehicle accident. Over 200 million people suffer from whiplash in U.S. Rear impact motor vehicle accident can cause sudden abnormal motion in the neck. The word whiplash stands for damage of the bone as well as tissue. Even though whiplash is not a life treating injury, it may lead to partial disability for a prolonged time. After the motor vehicle accident, most of the people recover from whiplash injuries in a reasonable amount of time. In some cases, patient may continue to have the symptoms years after injury.
  • 46. WHAT CAUSES WHIPLASH ? Whiplash injuries are caused by rear impact motor vehicle accident. The force from the impact causes the person’s torso to move forward while the unrestrained head and neck falls back. This puts the neck in a hyper extension position. Studies indicate that after the motor vehicle accident lower cervical vertebrae are forced in to a hyperextension position while the upper cervical vertebrae is forced to a hyper-flexed position and causes the cervical spine to assume a ‘S’ shape which is totally abnormal. It also causes damages to muscles, ligaments and facet capsule which hold the cervical vertebrae together
  • 48. SYMPTOMS OF WHIPLASH The symptoms include neck pain, headache , shoulder pain and stiffness, dizziness, fatigue, jaw pain and weakness, visual disturbances and rigging in ears. In severe cases it may lead to depression, anger, frustration, anxiety, stress, insomnia and many other symptoms .
  • 49. TREATMENT OF WHIPLASHYour doctor may prescribe a soft cervical collar. This is to avoid any farther injuries. It is very important to start moving as soon as possible since immobilization can cause long recovery period. It also causes muscle atrophy, reduced blood flow and delays healing of damaged muscles tissue. Physical therapy will help you to regain the strength of the muscles as well as reduce pain motion.
  • 50. BACK INJURIES Back Injuries which causes chronic pain are the worst and most prevalent injury suffered by the victims involved in car accident. Ten percent of these car accident back injuries can lead to long term pain and disability in those affected. Motor vehicle accident can cause herniated disc, spinal cord injuries, and compression fractures .
  • 51. SPRAINS AND STRAINS:- when one the ligaments are stretched, twisted or torn. The jerky motion during the motor vehicle accident causes it to happen. Muscle strain occurs when the muscle fibers are stretched or torn. The symptoms include stiffness, bruising, muscle soreness, numbness or tingling .
  • 52. HERNIATED DISC Our spine is made of 33 vertebrae that are stacked up on top of one another. There is a rubbery piece of cartilage between these vertebrae and is called the invertebral disk. Imagine disk as a tire with gelatin kind of substance on the hole of the tire. The tire (outer part) is called the annulus and the gelatin type of substance is called the nucleus Motor vehicle accident causes the discs to slip from its place or to rupture. As a result, the space the vertebrae decreases and the disk becomes flatter and less flexible . When the rough surface of the vertebral joint rub together, inflammation occurs and may feel pain as the nerves get compressed or irritated. It may occur throughout the spine or may confine to one disk. In several cases, since the nerve gets compressed, it may lead to sciatica which is experience by numbness, tingling and even weakness in arms and legs.
  • 53. COMPRESSION FRACTURES Motor vehicle accident can cause compression fractures. It usually occurs among the older adults. The force of the impact may create tiny cracks on the bones which will eventually result in deformity or collapsing of bone. Symptoms of compression fracture include difficulty in breathing and change in posture.
  • 54. Health Care Costs and Savings:- The total annual cost of traffic-related bicyclist death and injury among children ages 14 and under is more than $2.2 billion. Every dollar spent on a bike helmet saves societies $30 in direct medical costs and other costs to society. If 85 percent of all child cyclists wore bicycle helmets in one year, the lifetime medical cost savings could total between $109 million and $142 million. A review of hospital discharge data in Washington state found that treatment for nonfatal bicycle injuries among children ages 14 and under costs more than $113 million each year, an average of $218,000 per injured child.
  • 55. Inhumanity during road accidents:- • Every 60 minutes, 15 persons die in road accidents in India. According to the Law Commission of India, at least 50% of fatalities can be prevented if road accident victims receive medical attention within the first critical hour after the accident. However, a 2006 study conducted by the Indian Journal of Surgery shows that 80% of victims in India do not receive emergency medical care within that Golden Hour because people don’t help those victims . • People don’t help the victims of road accident because of the fear of getting involved in court matters and being arrested by the police but according to law no action can be taken against
  • 57. Why peopledo not help aroad accident victim? • Why do people hesitate to come forward and lend a hand? A 2013 survey conducted by Save LIFE Foundation, an NGO focused on improving road safety and emergency care in India, shows that 74% bystanders are unlikely to assist a seriously injured person on the road, irrespective of whether they are alone at the spot or in the presence of others. The study, conducted across seven cities, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kanpur, Mumbai, Indore, Ludhiana and Kolkata, also offers some insight into why bystanders fail to come forward to assist. • *88% of bystanders who were unlikely to assist cited legal hassles like police questioning and court appearances as a deterring factor. • *74% said they would be more inclined to step forward and help if the accident occurred in a familiar environment as they were more confident of receiving help and support.
  • 59. A Sikh person taking out his turban to help a boy .
  • 60. From Boys to Heroes-Beacon of Hope • Devendra Kumar Dubey, a resident of Delhi, was riding a cycle when he was hit by a speeding autorickshaw. Such was the impact that his cycle was thrown away and he was flung to the ground. The driver fled the scene, leaving the autorickshaw behind. Three school boys saw this and when no one listened to their pleas for help, they hoisted Mr Dubey in the auto and pushed it to a nearby hospital. Thanks to this timely intervention, doctors were able to heal his severely damaged leg .
  • 61. Angels on the Road :-• Ridden with potholes, roads in Mysore city not only make for uncomfortable travel but are dangerous—leading to frequent, often fatal accidents. • A group of students from Orchid Public School in Mysore had been trying to get local authorities to fix the road leading to their school. Numerous petitions were sent, but no action was taken so they decided to repair the road themselves as part of a project for Design for Change, a global movement which encourages children to come up with creative solutions to a problem and ways to implement it. • The students approached a local road contractor to find out what was required to repair the potholes. They split up
  • 63. Saviour on wheels :- • Imagine you or your close ones being in an accident and no one coming to help you out. Although bystanders are afraid of consequences of helping an accident victim, one man has made this his vocation in life. He used to be an ambulance driver for the local doctors in Gajraula, Uttar Pradesh, until one day in 2004 he decided that he would use his ambulance solely for helping others. His name is Bhurra. • Bhurra stands guard on the Gajraula National Highway 24 —a busy road connecting Delhi and Lucknow. It is known for the high number of road accidents that take place there. Bhurra keeps a watch on this highway. He is on
  • 65. Traffic Wardens :-• When Odette Katrak returned to India from the UK, she was appalled by the indiscipline on the roads of Gurgaon. Not the kind to give up easily, Ms Katrak decided to do something about it and today champions the cause of road safety as an activist, writer as well as Road Safety Officer with the Gurgaon Traffic Police. For the last four years, she has been working in different ways towards changing behaviour and safety levels on Gurgaon’s roads, along with other like-minded volunteers. Her articles in Gurgaon’s newspapers on road safety are incisive and aimed at hitting the conscience of Gurgaon’s many educated drivers who blatantly break traffic rules. • She has interacted with no less than 5000 people on the roads, personally appealing to them to adhere to traffic rules, and trained over  2000 people from schools, colleges, corporates, to become agents of change and spread the message for better
  • 67. Traffic Baba:-• Clad in a white gown and cap, microphone in hand, Mukul Chandra Joshi is a familiar sight on major traffic crossings in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Every evening, without fail, this 80 year-old insurance agent, heads for a major traffic junction and gently tells people to make way for pedestrians , or not to jump a red signal, or not to drive without a helmet. • This has been Mr. Joshi’s mission since 2003 after a close friend lost his son in a road accident. Shaken, he started thinking of ways to prevent such senseless deaths. He decided that educating people about traffic rules and regulations in a kind, calm manner
  • 69. CONCLUSION Even though road accident is a very big emerging problem not only in this country but in other countries too we can overcome it by applying some simple preventive methods in our life and also advicing others to apply those methods in the life . As we know “PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE”.
