  2. 2. <ul><li>Food: various kinds of grass, herbs, leaves, bark, fruit
  3. 3. If there are many red deer in wood, they can be dangerous because they gnaw wood and peel off bark from trees</li></li></ul><li><ul><li>Environment: deciduous and mixed forest with meadows and clearing, but they live in coniferous forest too
  4. 4. They live allaround Europe , except northern parts
  5. 5. In Slovakia , we have now around 35 000 head of deer</li></li></ul><li>Body:<br />Length of body - 250 cm <br />Length of tail - 15 cm<br />Height - 150 cm <br />Weigh -250 kg<br />Female are smaller<br />Color of summer coat is reddish-brown, winter coat is grayish-brown<br />Stags have huge antlers, female don´t have them<br />Red deer fawns are born spotted and spots remain 2-3 months<br />
  6. 6. During rutting season, stags roar very loudly and try to attract female. Stags roar when they compete with other males, too. Rutting season lasts from the middle of September till the middle of October. <br />Fawns are very lively after their birth and hinds feed them with breast milk<br />Red deer live up to 20 years<br />After the rut, deer live in large, organized herds<br />Red deer communicate with various smell, voice, sight signals <br />They are hidden during the day and go out of thick forest in night to feed themselves and can slowly walk many kilometers <br />
