A dominant allele is a trait that always shows up in the organism when the allele is present. A recessive allele on the other hand is masked, or covered up by the dominant allele is present. A trait controlled by a recessive allele will only show up if the organism does not have the dominant allele.
In co dominance, the alleles are neither dominant or recessive. As a result of this neither allele is masked in the offspring.
The alleles of two parents combined to express traits in their offspring by, when the parents’ genes connect to form the DNA for the offspring alleles fromone parent and alleles from another parent combine.
Human Genome Project The Human Genome Project is a plan to develop a map of the human genome. This project should take two decades. Some scientists did not believe that we have the correct technology for this kind of work. The project started in 1990. One ethical issue is the treatment and enhancement of humans. One outcome of the project is the ability to predict health risks. Through genetic mapping there have been many newly found diseases being discovered every month.
Genetic Disorders 1. a. Single Gene disorders is a disorder caused by a mutation in the affected persons DNA where, Multifactorial disorders are caused by the interaction of genetic environmental factors. b. Mutlifactorial disorders are caused by the interaction of genetic environmental fctors however, chromosome abnormalities are caused by errors in the number or structure of chromosomes. 2. Genetic counselors help couples understand their chances of having a child with a particular disease. Genetic counselors use tools such as karyotypes, pedigree charts and punnet squares to help them in their work. 3. A karyotype is a picture of all the chromosomes in a cell. The chromosomes in karyotype are arranged in pairs. A karyotype can reveal whether a developing baby has the correct number of chromosomes in it’s cells or whether it’s a boy or girl.
Argument 1 If the parents pick the babies genetics will it be safe for the baby? If the parents are picking the baby’s genetic traits, what will happen when the baby is being created? Will the baby be injured or die? Or will the baby live and have mental issues? If God intended for babies to be born the right way using sexual reproduction than why are people doing this? This is a reason why we are against designer babies because it shows that the babies could possibly get hurt or injured in the process and it is not the way God intended for babies to be brought into the world.
Argument 2 In the next several years will our concept of normal become more slim? Will we see baldness, freckles and shyness as “genetic diseases” to be cured? This is a reason why we are against designer babies. It will change our human nature and people who do have “genetic diseases” such as, freckles, baldness, and shyness will start becoming less common until they are gone and those “genetic diseases” wont exist anymore.
Argument 3 If you could design your perfect baby would you? If you could make a baby the exact way that you want it would you do that? This is a reason why we are with designer babies. We are with it because then if you use designer babies you can design the perfect baby and you can pick the sex, it won’t be a “hit and miss affair” if you want a boy or girl.
Argument 4 “ Before the new millennium is many years old, parents may be going to fertility clinics and picking from a list of options the way car buyers order air conditioning and chrome-alloy wheels.” -TIME .com This is another reason why we are with designer babies. This quote shows that if designer babies continues than the parents will be able to soon go and pick out the traits for the baby at a “fertility clinic” just like car buyers do when they order cars. We are with that because then the parents will be able to pick the traits for the baby.
Conclusion In conclusion if you design your own baby the way that you want it, it may not perfectly come out and you would be messing with nature and the baby will not be genetically linked to you.
