  2. 2. Basic Principles Of Genetics <ul><li>Some alleles are dominate while some are recessive. Dominate alleles are the traits that always shows up in the organisms when the allele is present. And recessive alleles are masked, or covered up, whenever the dominate allele is present. </li></ul><ul><li>Traits that are controlled with co-dominate alleles are neither dominate nor recessive. </li></ul><ul><li>You inherit one allele from each parent through the process of heredity. Then they match up and show what the kid will be. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Human Genome Project <ul><li>The human genome project first started in 1990 The main goals of the Human Genome project is to indentify the DNA sequence of every gene in the human genome. After that we will have an encyclopedia of genetic info about humans. </li></ul><ul><li>The implications of the human genome project in regards to ethical, legal and social implications are the way people act. Some questions they been wondering were how do people control their behavior? Do peoples genes make them behave a particular way? </li></ul><ul><li>The president signed the law GINA which prohibits U.S insurance companies. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Genetic Disorders <ul><li>A single gene disorder is colorblindness, commonly inherited by males. </li></ul><ul><li>Chromosomes abnormities are caused by to many or to few chromosomes. Some disorders are down syndrome, hemophilia and sickle-cell disease. </li></ul><ul><li>Genetic counseling is helpful because counselors use pedigree charts, punnett squares and karyotypes to help them in their work. This makes it easier for parents to understand the risks. </li></ul>

Argument 1 (con) <ul><li>Critics and ethicists mention that the tremendous human safety risks, and argue that one cannot prevent the misuse of technology for non-medical purposes such as enhancing ones athletic performance. </li></ul><ul><li>A designer baby costs about $18000. Also, the parents can choose many of its traits as if they were playing a role playing game on the computer. Eye and color of hair, intelligence and many other traits of a baby-to-be can be customized, making the strange factor even more well-known. </li></ul><ul><li>We think that it would be to much money and really bad for the baby. There could be a mutation in the genes. </li></ul>

Argument 2 (pro) <ul><li>Parents who have children with serious diseases, can decide to have designer babies so that they could help their children. </li></ul><ul><li>Genetic testing is becoming very advanced.  This science has great potential.  When the embryo is only made up of as few as six cells, it can be tested for many genetic markers.  The original stated purpose for the science is the ability to minimize the risk of having a child born with Down's Syndrome or other serious birth defects, or predisposition to many serious diseases.  </li></ul>

Argument 3 (con) <ul><li>May ruin the gender balance (e.g. in China parents make abortion if the fetus is female). </li></ul><ul><li>Engineering your baby reduces genetic changeability which might actually increase the chances of genetic diseases for children of these designer babies. </li></ul><ul><li>We are against cloning because we think it doesn’t matter what your baby looks like and you shouldn’t design your baby. </li></ul>

Argument 4 (pro) <ul><li>Designer babies began to rise in order to cure different kind of genetic diseases and disorders as well as some untreatable diseases such as different kind of cancers. </li></ul><ul><li>As the modern science is yet to find how to treat or cure such problems, the idea of changing the approach was established. It may not be possible to treat these diseases just yet, but it may be possible prevent these diseases. </li></ul>
